Grade Separations

Typical railroad crossing San Bernardino Associated Governments was awarded $240 million through the Proposition 1B Trade Corridor Improvement Fund (TCIF) in April 2008 to separate heavily traveled roads from railroad freight traffic and other goods movement corridor improvements throughout San Bernardino County.

Grade separations involve the division of vehicle traffic and railroad traffic by building bridges over or under the railroad tracks, or rerouting the train tracks over or under existing streets.

In 2001, SANBAG completed a study of the length of time motorists have to wait at railroad crossings and established a list of the longest delay times experienced currently and projected in the year 2020. From that list, the SANBAG Board of Directors established a priorities list for funding grade separations from this $240 million allocation.

Seven Grade Separation Projects funded by Prop 1B TCIF:

  • South Milliken Avenue in City of Ontario
  • Vineyard Avenue in City of Ontario
  • Archibald Avenue in City of Ontario
  • Glen Helen Parkway in San Bernardino County
  • Laurel Street in the City of Colton

Other high priority projects in San Bernardino:

  • Monte Vista Avenue in Montclair
