Bike Utah offers a Youth Bicycle Education and Safety Training (BEST) program to fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. There is no cost to any school or student to participate. Bike Utah will provde a trained instructor, bicycles, helmets, and all other necessary equipment for the duration of the program. For more information contact Bike Utah.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Classroom Physical Activity Book

A Walking School Bus is a group of children who walk to and from scchol with one or more adults. Learn how you can set up a safe walking school bus in your neighborhood. The Utah Department of Transportation has unveiled a walking school bus app to help parents locate and coordinate with other walkers in their neighborhoods, and it alerts parents when their children make it to school. Walking and biking to school safetly is important to all of our children. The Safe Routes to School’s 2016 State Report Cards providse a snapshot of how supportive each state is of walking, bicycling, and physical activity for children and adults, as of 2016. 

The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model is an expansion and update of the Coordinated School Health (CSH) approach. The WSCC incorporates the components of CSH and the tenets of the ASCD’s* whole child approach to strengthen a unified and collaborative approach to learning and health. The WSCC model focuses its attention on the child, emphasizes a school-wide approach, and acknowledges learning, health, and the school as being a part and reflection of the local community. A smarter lunchroom is one that nudges kids towards nutritious foods. Over 30 million children are fed by the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). This program is an opportunity for kids to select and consume a balance diet. The Smarter Lunchroom applies research-based principles that lead children to make healthy choices when provided with the full spectrum of choice.

USDA final rules that will ensure that children have access to healthy snacks and that nutrition standards for the foods marketed and served in schools are consistent. Here's a summary of the rules and what they mean for farm to school efforts:

  1. The Local School Wellness Policy final rule empowers communities to take an active role in the health of their children. These policies guide a school district's efforts to establish school environments that support healthy eating and physical activity.
  2. The Smart Snacks in School final rule aligns the nutritional quality of snacks sold to children during the school day with the science-based improvements made to school lunches and breakfasts over the last five years.

Funding Opportunities

Chef Ann Foundation: Fruit and Veggie Grant for Schools
Application Deadline: Rolling basis depending on available funding
The Chef Ann Foundation is offering $2,500 grants to schools for Project Produce: Fruit and Veggie Grants for Schools, a program that supports schools in purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables and showcasing them via planned lunchroom activities where students can taste fresh produce, and take part in nutrition education. Any district or independent school participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is eligible to apply. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis depending on available funding.

Good Sports
Application Deadline: Rolling

Good Sports is able to focus on the respective needs of each individual program and help to offset the main factors that are causing the greatest challenges. As a result of the donations we’ve distributed, recipients have been able to do one or more of the following: increase both the quality and quantity of vital equipment; lower participation fees; develop new programs; enhance their ability to maintain the athletes they currently serve; and perhaps most importantly, increase the total amount of kids that are active within their program.

HealthierUS School Challenge

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary certification initative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity. Monetary incentive awards are available for each HUSSC award level. Schools can submit an application at any time during the year.

CDC’s Healthy Schools program is pleased to announce the launch of the e-Learning Series for Training Tools for Healthy Schools: Promoting Health and Academic Success (TTHS). Three TTHS tools were converted to online modules to provide users with:
