Smartcards

NASA Web Applications now require a smartcard

All Federal Agencies are mandated by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through OMB Memo M-11-11 to use PIV credentials as the common means of authentication for access to their Agency's facilities, networks, and information systems.

To comply with Federal mandates and to improve security, NASA is moving toward the exclusive use of the NASA Personal Identification Validation (PIV-II) smartcard (the NASA "badge") for login and other authentication to NASA systems, networks, and applications.

An increasing number of NASA web applications are integrated with Launchpad, and some of those applications require smartcard-only authentication.

What does this mean to JPL?

The only impact to JPL staff currently is for people who need to use NASA web applications that are accessed via Launchpad and that have been converted to smartcard login only. All JPL systems and applications remain accessible via JPL Username and Password or RSA TFA Token authentication.

For more information on how to use your smartcard and troubleshooting, please see

.

Note to Macintosh users: Macintosh users will need to install the smartcard middleware available in Self Service.
