Kristyn Damadeo from the SAGE III on ISS project read to students during Earth Science Week.
The Science Directorate at NASA Langley provides educational
outreach opportunities to teachers, students, and the general
public through a variety of award-winning projects.
Education Projects
These projects inspire and engage K-16 students in science
through hands-on learning with authentic research as citizen scientists.

S'COOL - Student Cloud Observations On-Line
The CERES S’COOL Project, started in 1997, involves students and the citizen science community in real science,
by making, reporting and analyzing ground truth observations of clouds to assist NASA in the validation
of the CERES satellite instruments. The multilingual S’COOL website offers over 80 classroom-ready lesson plans,
an interactive reporting system and helpful materials and resources for observing clouds.
The S’COOL Project has a broad range of users in 87 countries around the world and has collected over 125,000 ground observations.

LEARN - The Long-term Engagement in Authentic Research with NASA
The NASA LEARN Project is an innovative program that provides educators with on-site research
and training with NASA Scientists in the summer and guided research projects that continue on
throughout the school year. These educators conduct their own research with help of a team
of NASA Scientists and share and integrate these projects into the classroom.

GLOBE at Langley – Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment, at NASA’s Langley Research Center
GLOBE is a worldwide hands-on, science and education program that promotes collaboration among students,
teachers, the citizen science community, and scientists to conduct inquiry-based investigations about our environment.
Teachers from over 100 countries have been trained to lead their students to collect valid scientific measurements of Earth.
Together the GLOBE community has collected over 100 million measurements.
GLOBE is a NASA funded program, and NASA’s Langley Research Center has been a GLOBE Partner since 2003.

Contrail Education
The Contrail Education project is a partnership between GLOBE, S’COOL, National Science Foundation (NSF),
and NASA’S Langley Research Center to promote collaboration between students and scientists on the study
of contrails and how they affect the Earth’s climate. The Contrail Education website provides scientific
and educational information to walk participants through observing and reporting contrails focused on science practices.

Ozone Bioindicator Garden Project
The Ozone Bioindicator Garden Project provides background information on ozone-induced plant injury,
training in identifying ozone injury to some specific plants, activities and links for getting involved,
and learning resources for educators and citizen scientists alike.

CALIPSO - Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and
Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations
Launched in 2006, the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO)
satellite provides new insight into the role that clouds and atmospheric aerosols play in regulating
Earth's weather, climate, and air quality. The CALIPSO education activities focus on supporting students as scientists.

DISCOVER-AQ -
Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality
DISCOVER-AQ is taking a closer look at the air quality near the surface of the Earth,
helping us better understand the ingredients that make up the air we breathe.
The airborne field campaigns scheduled for DISCOVER-AQ are: January 2013 (California),
late Summer 2013 (Texas), and Summer 2014 (Colorado). DISCOVER-AQ is working primarily
through the GLOBE program to involve K-12 students in the mission.

SAGE III on ISS - Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III
The SAGE III instrument studies ozone, a gas found in the upper atmosphere that acts as Earth’s sunscreen.
SAGE III is scheduled to launch in 2014 and will be mounted to the International Space Station.
Education activities include a new online community space called Sky Art where students,
citizen scientists and the public can share photos of sunrise and sunset and learn about how they are related to ozone.
