Governor Bentley has proclaimed October as Pro Bono Month in
Alabama recognizing that one in four Alabamians living in poverty experience legal problems with the majority of
these being civil problems: consumer issues, bankruptcy issues, health issues,
family law issues, employment issues and housing issues. In support of this, the state and local bar
associations, law schools, and legal professionals throughout the state are
stepping up their efforts to provided needed services. Two events are designed specifically for
veterans.
On October 27,
2016 the Faulkner Law Public Interest Program and the Montgomery Volunteer
Lawyers Program will host the Veterans’ Civil Legal Clinic. Law students and supervising attorneys will
offer free legal advice on civil matters and may provide referrals where
representation is needed. Services will
be available from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the new Central Alabama Veterans
Health Care System (CAVHCS) location off Chantilly Pkwy (8105 Veterans Way) in
Montgomery.
On November 4,
2016 the Alabama Law Public Interest Institute will host the Veterans Legal
Assistance Clinic. Law students and
supervising attorneys will offer free legal information and advice on a wide
range of legal issues including family law, criminal matters, housing, and estate
planning. Services will be available
from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Sports Atrium of the Tuscaloosa V.A.
Medical Center.
