ISO 9001:2008 is an internationally recognized, highly credible standard that provides a guide for establishing,
improving and maintaining an effective quality management system (QMS) for any organization. Established as an
internationally recognized standard, ISO 9001:2008 was initially aimed at manufacturing, but now is recognized as
an excellent management system for any organization. ISO 9001:2008 is highly respected by business and industry and
is recognized as a superior system for ensuring high performance.
The ISO 9001:2008 standard is international in scope. Organizations must demonstrate conformance to all requirements of this
standard prior to an initial certification by an accredited external agency / registration body. This conformance includes the
need for the organization to identify, define and meet requirements for quality, continuous improvement, product and service
provision, and the measurement and improvement of customer satisfaction.
As part of its continuous improvement, CALPIA established a goal of adopting ISO 9001:2008 as the foundation of its
overall quality management system. CALPIA is one of only two state correctional industries in the nation that has achieved
ISO certification, and the only state correctional industry program with inmates that are trained and certified ISO
Internal Auditors.
