CMIP5 - Experiment Design - Overview

The CMIP5 (CMIP Phase 5) experiment design has been finalized and the set of experiments was selected. The purpose of these experiments is to address outstanding scientific questions that arose as part of the IPCC AR4 (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 4th Assessment Report) process, improve understanding of climate, and to provide estimates of future climate change that will be useful to those considering its possible consequences. (The IPCC’s AR5 is now scheduled to be published in early 2013).

The details of these experiments can be found on the Experiment Design page.

The data that results from those experiments will comprise the CMIP5 database in which all the data will follow CMIP5 output specifications. To learn about the avaliable data, the variables inside the data, the data format, file names and how to find a specific experiment from the dataset files name, see Data Description page.
