Outreach

Outreach Services are provided by a network of contracted and state Outreach Specialists. A major focus of their work is getting appropriate and effective technology to Virginians who are deaf or hard of hearing. They provide Information and Referral about resources for hearing loss.

Outreach can provide:

  • Training for persons who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and their families.
  • Training to businesses, caregivers, public safety officials, and professionals that serve persons who have a hearing loss.
  • Information and training about local services including where to find sign language classes, support services, and the technical equipment needed to aid persons who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing with their communication needs.
  • Community education through information tables at local events, speaking to civic organizations, attending support group meetings, and working one on one with consumers who need training to use the equipment to meet their needs.

Information on Hearing Aids

While the Commonwealth of Virginia does not provide any program for financial assistance to purchase hearing aids, we have compiled a list of resources and information into a Hearing Aid Packet. This collection of resources contains helpful information on the different types of hearing aids, how to best understand and select one, and financial options available. Information on American Sign Language Classes

Currently, the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing does not conduct any American Sign Language Classes at the agency. However, we attempt to stay abreast of any classes offered throughout the State. Information on Events for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the State of Virginia

Events are held all across the State of Virginia for those who are Deaf or hard of hearing. As we are made aware of an event taking place, we will post that information on our Facebook page. While this is not an exhaustive list, we try to provide as much information as possible for anyone to enjoy and partake of these opportunities.
