MISSOURI ATTORNEY GENERAL CHRIS KOSTER

Attorney General Chris Koster has served as the state of Missouri’s top law enforcement officer since 2009. During his two terms as Attorney General, Koster’s office has recovered more than $282 million for the state’s health care system from Medicaid provider fraud and illegal practices by pharmaceutical companies; aggressively protected Missouri consumers against fraud, recovering more than $211 million from judgments and settlements, including from mortgage-relief and debt-settlement scams; prosecuted some of the state’s most violent criminals, including murderers and child sex abusers; and protected Missouri’s environment by pursuing legal actions against those who pollute water, land, and air, while standing his ground against federal government overreach.

As Attorney General, Koster has convened public meetings and task forces to formulate policy recommendations on a number of issues important to Missourians, including urban crime, representative policing, domestic violence, and human trafficking. He has also personally prosecuted killers and argued before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Prior to being elected Attorney General, Koster served in the Missouri Senate from 2004 to 2008, representing Cass, Johnson, Bates, and Vernon counties. He previously served as Cass County Prosecuting Attorney for 10 years. He was first elected prosecutor in 1994 and was re-elected in 1998 and 2002 by wide margins.  

Photo of AG Koster with kidsAs prosecutor, Koster supervised a staff of 20 individuals dedicated to enforcing Missouri's criminal laws. Additionally, his office served as the civil counsel for all non-criminal matters before the county government.During his tenure as prosecutor, Koster supervised litigation in thousands of cases. He led investigations into many of the Kansas City area’s most notorious criminal cases, including the investigation and prosecution of serial killer John E. Robinson. He has extensive trial experience and has personally argued and won cases before the Missouri Supreme Court. 

Prior to becoming prosecuting attorney, Koster practiced law with the Kansas City law firm of Blackwell Sanders. He also served as an Assistant Attorney General from 1991 to 1993.

Koster was born and raised in St. Louis. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri School of Law. He also earned a Masters in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
