MISSION

The AWG provides operational advisory support globally and rapid solution development to the Army and Joint Force commanders to enhance Soldier survivability and combat effectiveness, and enable the defeat of current and emerging threats in support of Unified Land Operations.

AWG CORE FUNCTIONS

Operational Advising: Support Army and Joint Force Commanders by advising and assisting predeployment and in-theater forces to enable the defeat of current and emerging threats.

Identify Capability Gaps: Provide observations and analyses of regional operating environments to identify capability gaps and describe potential conflict zones relevant to future Army requirements.

Solution Development: Rapidly develop, disseminate and transition nonmaterial and material countermeasures to create tactical and operational advantages in support of Unified Land Operations.

Assist DOTMLPF Integration: Serve as a catalyst for developing Army capabilities that enhance organizational adaptability, Soldier survivability and combat effectiveness. This is done across the domains of doctrine, organizations, training, material, leadership and education, personnel and facilities (DOTMLPF).Under General DePuy, TRADOC fundamentally transformed the Army into the best trained, equipped, led, and organized modern land power in the world. Today, TRADOC sustains its proud legacy of shaping the Army through four primary functions:

WHAT IS ASYMMETRIC WARFARE?

Asymmetric warfare is the application of dissimilar strategies, tactics, capabilities and approaches used to circumvent or negate an opponent’s strengths while exploiting his weaknesses.

THE AWG

The Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG), headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland, is an Army unit of highly skilled warriors who provide observation, analysis, training and advisory support to Army and Joint Force Units in order to enhance their capabilities to predict, mitigate, counter and defeat asymmetric threats and methods. The AWG is the only unit in the Army that actively seeks new enemy TTPs and looks to develop solutions. We place ourselves in the right areas to solve those problems that have the potential to overwhelm or undermine a unit’s best efforts at accomplishing its mission. The AWG is designed to identify and develop Army solutions for capability gaps of our friendly forces and exploit enemy vulnerabilities.

The Group maintains a global presence and focuses on identifying and overcoming emerging asymmetric threats. The AWG is an enabler to the Army transformation by providing threat solutions through firsthand observations.

The AWG operates within all types of forces to quickly blend capabilities and collaborate across the Army spectrum. The Group comprises active duty Soldiers, Department of the Army civilians and contractors who are subject matter experts.

POSITIONS

Operational Advisor (ASI U9)

Operate in an unconstrained and undefined environment where there are no scripts, and where the enemy does not follow a playbook.

Understand the supported unit’s operational environment or battlespace from the Platoon to Division levels, and the associated commander’s priorities.

Understand the bigger picture and priorities of the Theater Commander, since they affect subordinates’ decision-making processes.

Understand the friendly, neutral and threat actors at the different levels without the luxury of developing that knowledge over a period of months.

Generate networks within the supported unit and from outside agencies in order to attack and solve complex problems.

Understand the influencers within the supported organization.

Get to the root cause of a problem and develop an attainable solution given current constraints and limitations. At the same time, the Operational Advisor should challenge the system to ensure that all avenues of solution development are considered.

Our Operational Support and Staff missions vary based on MOS and experience. Members are not confined to the office—they have the opportunity to deploy while providing support to some of the best Soldiers and civilians in the Army. They are an integral part of the analysis of emerging and current threats and the solution development process.
