What is YFIRE?

Youth Firesafety Intervention Resource Education

In the State of Kansas we currently have two YFIRE coalitions, which are geared to help boys and girls that are involved with unsupervised, experimental, mischievous or illegal use of fire.

The Fire and Burn Safety Alliance of South Central Kansas

This alliance covers the following counties:

  • Sedgwick
  • Butler
  • Kingman
  • Reno
  • Cowley
  • Sumner
  • Harvey

These coalitions provide ideas and tips for fire prevention, home safety checklists, brochures, community awareness presentations, smoke alarm education and home exit drills. Intervention for youths already known to have dangerous fire-setting habits can take many forms. Because each community has different resources available each YFIRE coalition will be different.
firefighters talking to kids Intervention can take place in the form of: Fire-Safety Academics, Age-Appropriate Lesson Plans, and Peer Training Opportunities, Court Referral, Diversion Programs, Victim Offender Mediation, Teen Court Referral, Community Service and Restitution Programs, Referral to Counseling Services, Referral to Inpatient Treatment Centers, Case Conferences and Training for Mental Health Professionals.
