Agricultural Security Areas (ASA) protect farms from local ordinances and nuisance lawsuits affecting normal farming activities and granting them special consideration in farmland condemnation reviews. To establish an ASA, farmers submit a petition to the township supervisors. The ASA is reevaluated every seven years; however, new parcels of farmland may be added to an established ASA at any time. A minimum of 250 acres is required for the establishment of an ASA; 500 acres are required for farms to be preserved under the state program.
An eligible property must be at least 10 contiguous acres in size and used for the production of an agricultural commodity. Non-contiguous parcels of less than 10 acres are eligible if able to produce $2,000 annually from the sale of agricultural products.
