If you've received orders to VAQ-130, your command will receive a Welcome Aboard message for you within about 5 working days. That message will provide you with the name of your Command Sponsor, and their contact information. You should also be receiving a Welcome Aboard package in the mail (if you're coming from outside the Whidbey Island area) and a personal letter from your Command Sponsor within a few weeks. If this hasn't happened, make sure to contact the Command Sponsorship Coordinator.

Area Information

Electronic Attack Squadron 130 is stationed in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington. The base is centered in the heart of the Puget Sound, halfway between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. Naval Air Station Whidbey Island prides itself on having among the best unaccompanied and accompanied housing and messing facilities for its personnel, and recent major remodeling of the Navy Exchange and Commissary. In addition, it has excellent recreation facilities and many programs that take advantage of the beautiful Pacific Northwest outdoors.

VAQ-130 is one of thirteen EA-6B Prowler squadrons based in Whidbey Island. Prowlers are responsible for providing electronic attack for the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, and coalition forces. This unique mission is vital during peacetime and critical in combat.

While embarked, the Zappers operate from the deck of the USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. The squadron has approximately 220 dedicated personnel and is the oldest electronic attack squadron in the U.S. Navy. We are proud of our record in retention excellence and of the numerous safety awards we have received.

Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) is located in Oak Harbor, WA, on beautiful Whidbey Island part of Island County, which is in the northwest corner of Washington state, 90 miles north of Seattle; approximately a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic. Within close proximity to the San Juan Islands and the Cascade and Olympic mountains, Whidbey Island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing, hunting, hiking, sailing, canoeing, camping and bike riding are all prevalent in this spectacular rural area with its rocky beaches and rolling hills. Because Whidbey Island is a rural area, it does have a fairly high cost of living.

NASWI is comprised of two bases five miles apart: the Seaplane Base and the Naval Air Station (also known as Ault Field). Located on the western shore of the island, Ault Field contains most of the military activities, including the squadrons, main headquarters, barracks, galley, hospital, Bachelor Housing check-in, the Housing Resource Center Office, and Fleet and Family Support Center. The Seaplane Base is on the eastern shore at the edge of Oak Harbor. It houses the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Office and Thrift Store, Child Development Homes Office, the Commissary, the main Navy Exchange, and the Navy Lodge. History

The first entry in the official log of NAS Whidbey Island was on September 21, 1942. Originally, the Air Station was commissioned as a base for seaplane patrol operations, rocket firing training, torpedo overhaul, and both recruit and petty officer training. Today, NAS Whidbey Island is home to the majority of the Navy's Prowler squadrons. Over 25 tenant commands are located at NASWI, providing training, medical and dental, and other support services.

Mission

The mission of NAS Whidbey Island is to provide the highest quality facilities, services and products to the Naval Aviation Community, and all organizations utilizing the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island. Some of the major NASWI commands are: Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing-10, Commander Electronic Attack Wing Pacific, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron-61, Naval Hospital Oak Harbor, Naval Operations Support Center, Fleet Readiness Center Northwest, Naval Ocean Processing Facility, Marine Aviation Training Support Group-53, Search and Rescue, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit-11, and the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Whidbey Island. Population Served

NASWI supports approximately 9,000 military personnel with an additional 13,000 family members, over 10,000 retirees and 2,500 civilian employees. We also support over 30 Canadian Forces and their families.

Base Transportation

There is no military transportation provided at this time between the Ault Field and Seaplane Bases but there is a shuttle service available on Ault Field. Currently the Ault Field shuttle runs Monday-Friday from 5 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. There are currently two shuttle routes: Northerly Hangars and FRCNW and the Hangar 7 and 9.

The Northerly Hangars and FRCNW shuttle runs two continuous shuttles every 10 minutes dropping off and picking up at the following locations in order: Back of Barracks 8 -> Barracks 2701 -> Row barracks between Buildings 377 & 378 -> Hangar 6/FRCNW -> Hangar 8/10/FRCNW -> VR-61/Air Terminal/McDonalds -> Hangar 5 -> Gym -> Back of Barracks 8.

The Hangar 7 and 9 shuttle runs one continuous shuttle every 20 minutes dropping off and picking up at the following locations in order: Back of Barracks 8 -> Barracks 2701 -> Row barracks between Buildings 377 & 378 -> Hangar 9 -> Hangar 7 -> Gym -> Back of Barracks 8. For transportation between bases, Island Transit has bus stops located outside Ault Field at the Langley and Charles Porter gates and a bus stop located at Skagit Valley College located outside the Seaplane Base Maui Gate on East Pioneer Way.

The shuttles from Sea-Tac Airport drop off at Building 973, McCormick Lodge, on Ault Field for convenient lodging check-in.

Triangle Taxi is currently the only taxi cab company allowed on base, 360-675-82944

Temporary Lodging

Reservations at the Navy Lodge can be made for PCSing families up to one year in advance with orders. Make arrangements as soon as possible as the popular summer months often find it filled to capacity. A maximum of 10 days of Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) is authorized for this area. The Navy Lodge is located on the Seaplane Base and is within walking distance to the main Navy Exchange, Commissary, and downtown Oak Harbor. Bachelor quarters are available to incoming personnel and are located on the Ault Field base. The Navy Lodge has one pet-friendly room; however, the visitor's and bachelor's quarters do not allow pets.

Currently there are two hotels in Oak Harbor that allow pets: Acorn Motor Inn, 1-800-280-6646 and Coachman Inn, 1-800-635-0043. There are several options for kennel services:

Relocation Assistance

The Relocation Assistance Program provides information and referral services specifically designed for your needs. Relocation counseling, workshops, hospitality kits and loaner items are all provided to help make the moving experience easier and smoother. For additional relocation information or to setup an appointment, you can call 360-257-NAVY (6289). Base-wide indoctrination is conducted the first full week of each month on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Skywarrior Theater. For indoctrination questions please call 360-257-0035. A "Welcome Aboard NAS Whidbey Island" workshop is offered once a month usually the third Thursday of the month from 3:00-4:30 pm in the Nor'wester Activity Center. Critical Installation Information

Employment opportunities are very limited on Whidbey Island; however, the Fleet and Family Support Center's Family Employment Readiness Program can assist you in navigating through this tough market. You can call 1-866-854-0638 to schedule an appointment.

NAS Whidbey Island is open to all Exception Family Member (EFM) categories but services may not be available on the island. You may have to travel to Seattle, Bremerton, or Fort Lewis to receive needed medical or therapeutic care.

Washington State and local areas have specific rules governing dangerous animals such as Pit Bull Terriers. Please check the animal control department where you plan to reside for current rules and regulations.

Sponsorship

Settling into your new location and your new unit takes time. Plan My Move is designed to assist you with information about your new location. Complimenting Plan My Move each of the military Services has a Sponsorship Program which is very helpful in providing new unit information. Sponsors can make your transition smoother. The purpose of the Sponsorship program is to:

Provide a sense of belonging
Ease the transition for inbound service members or civilians and their family members
Increase productivity
Reduce culture shock
Help newcomers make informed decisions
Cultivate new friendships
Improve morale

A sponsor is someone from your new unit who is assigned to assist you settling into your new location. You can request a sponsor through your unit, or with help from the Relocation Assistance Program or the Family Center at your new installation.

Your Service will appoint your sponsor in writing. He/she will be the same or close to your rank and the same marital status, if at all possible. This person will be knowledgeable about the local community and the installation; available to assist you and your family for at least two weeks post arrival, and be someone who is positive and outgoing. A sponsor's duties include:

Contacting you and your family by letter of introduction or e-mail upon learning of your assignment to the installation
Following up with a personal phone call after contact has been made
Sending information about the installation/area which you may require, or putting you in touch with the resources on the web and at the installation that provide current, complete and up-to-date information such as those provide by the Relocation Program
Answering any questions which you or your family may have, or, again, providing the proper resources to answer those questions
Confirm transportation and lodging arrangements
Assisting with obtaining a Post Office Box for your mail
Meeting you and your family upon arrival
Accompanying you to your check in point for the unit
Introducing you to the Family Center and lending closet
Providing essential service locations such as commissary, exchange, gas station, bank
Being available when you arrive at your installation to meet you, show you around, and help you through in-processing.

Directions to Installation

Driving Directions

Whidbey Island is one of nine islands nestled in the Puget Sound between the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges of the Pacific Northwest just off the coast of Seattle. Whidbey Island is a 2-3 hour drive from Seattle or a 30-minute plane ride from the SeaTac Airport. There are many transportation options to arrive at Whidbey Island: personal vehicle via highway, personal vehicle via ferry, shuttle bus service, or airplane.

You can reach Whidbey Island by driving via Interstate 5 to the Washington State Route 20 over the beautiful Deception Pass Bridge in the north, Washington State Route 525 on the Clinton/Mukilteo ferry on the southern east coast (outside Everett), or the Keystone/Port Townsend ferry on the west coast (Olympic Peninsula).

Interstate Directions

From Interstate 5 - Take Exit 230 (Anacortes/Burlington). Turn left onto Highway 20, get in the right hand lane, and continue down this road until you see the signs directing you to turn left at the light for Oak Harbor. Turn left and continue on Highway 20 up the hill and across the bridge. This is a long, winding and often dark road so drive carefully. Proceed to the light adjoining Ault Field Road just outside the city of Oak Harbor and turn right. There is a welcome static display of an A6 and an EA6B aircraft at this intersection. To enter Ault Field's main gate proceed to the first stop light, turn right onto Charles Porter Avenue and proceed through the main gate (Charles Porter Gate). To go to the Pass and Decal office proceed to the second stop light, turn right onto Langley Boulevard, and turn right into the parking lot just before Langley Gate. To go to the Seaplane base (where the Navy Lodge is located) stay on Highway 20. Turn left at Torpedo Road, which is just past Ault Field Road, Westgate RV and in front of Penske Trucking. Torpedo Road forks, go to the left and proceed to the Torpedo Gate.

Ferry Directions

From Clinton/Mukilteo Ferry (located just outside of Everett off of Interstate 5, exit 182) - From the Clinton ferry landing, follow Highway 525 North, which turns into Highway 20, for about 43 miles before arriving to Oak Harbor. Turn left onto Swantown Road, which is the first stop light before entering Oak Harbor. Turn right onto Heller Road, and continue until it turns right onto Ault Field Road. To go to the Pass and Decal office turn left at the first light onto Langley Boulevard and turn right into the parking lot just before Langley Gate. To go to the main gate proceed to the second light, turn left onto Charles Porter Avenue, and proceed through the gate. To go to the Seaplane Base (where the Navy Lodge is located) stay on Highway 20. Highway 20 turns left at the third stop light but DO NOT turn left continue straight on this road; it will turn into Pioneer Way and leads straight into the Seaplane Base's Maui Gate.

From the Olympic Peninsula via the Port Townsend/Keystone Ferry - From the Keystone ferry landing, turn left on Engle Road. Stay left on Engle Road (about 4 miles) until you come to Highway 20 in Coupeville. Take a left at the light and continue north to Oak Harbor. Turn left onto Swantown Road, which is the first stop light before entering Oak Harbor. Turn right onto Heller Road, and continue until it turns right onto Ault Field Road. To go to the Pass and Decal office turn left at the first light onto Langley Boulevard and turn right into the parking lot just before Langley Gate. To go to the main gate proceed to the second light, turn left onto Charles Porter Avenue, and proceed through the gate. To go to the Seaplane Base (where the Navy Lodge is located) stay on Highway 20. Because cancellations are common, we recommend you visit the ferry website to verify the schedule before traveling.

For late night arrivals to Ault Field, you will need to utilize the Charles Porter Gate, which is the only gate open 24/7.

For late night arrivals to the Seaplane Base, you will need to utilize the Torpedo Gate, which is the only gate open 24/7. If arriving after Maui Gate hours, follow the above directions to the Seaplane Base except turn left at Regatta Drive just before the Maui Gate in front of Skagit Valley College. Proceed down Regatta Drive and turn right onto Crescent Harbor Road. Torpedo Gate is the first right shortly after turning onto Crescent Harbor Road.

Navy Lodge Directions

The Navy Lodge is located on the Seaplane Base, which has two gate options, Torpedo and Maui (directions to these gates are listed above). Torpedo gate is open 24/7. If you are coming from the Torpedo Gate, proceed forward along the coastline until you come to an all-way stop, go left, drive past the Navy Exchange and Commissary complex until you come to a fork in the road, turn left, the Navy Lodge will be on your right.

If you are coming from the Maui Gate, proceed forward until you come to an all-way stop, turn right, drive past the Navy Exchange and Commissary complex until you come to a fork in the road, go left, the Navy Lodge will be on your right.

Main Quarterdeck Directions, Building 385

Ault Field has four access gates: Charles Porter, Langley, Saratoga, and Nortz. Because Saratoga and Nortz gates have limited hours, we recommend all newcomers use either Charles Porter or Langley gates. Charles Porter is considered the main gate and is open 24/7. If you are arriving via the Charles Porter Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Charles Porter Avenue. You will pass several hangars, the base theater and the galley. The entrance to building 385 is on the right directly across the street from McDonalds; however, there are two roads - the first one leads to the air terminal and the second one to building 385.

If you are arriving via Langley Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Langley Boulevard, you will come to a four way stop, continue straight, this road will curve to the right, get in the left-hand lane after the curve and turn left onto Charles Porter Avenue. The entrance to building 385 is on the right directly across the street from McDonalds; however, there are two roads - the first one leads to the air terminal and the second one to building 385.

Nor'wester Activity Center Directions, Building 2556

The Nor'wester Activity Center (NAC) houses many programs and services: Housing Resource Office, Fleet and Family Support Center, and many Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs. From the Charles Porter Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Charles Porter Avenue. You will pass several hangars, the base theater and the galley. You will turn left onto Lexington Street just after McDonalds. This road is "s" shaped. You will come to a four-way stop, proceed forward and building 2556 is on the right, which is the end of this road.

From the Langley Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Langley Boulevard, you will come to a four way stop, turn left onto Midway Street. You will come to a stop sign and the end of this road, turn right onto Saratoga Street. You will come to a four-way stop, turn left and building 2556 is on the right, which is the end of this road.

McCormick Lodge Directions, Building 973

If you have reservations at the Visitor's Quarters or will be residing in Bachelor Housing, you will need to check in at Building 973, McCormick Lodge, which is the Visitor's Quarters. From the Charles Porter Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Charles Porter Avenue. You will pass several hangars, turn left on Midway street just after the base theater, proceed straight through the four-way stop. You will come to a "T" in the road, this is Saratoga Street, turn left, McCormick Lodge will be on the right.

From the Langley Gate - proceed forward through the gate on Langley Boulevard, you will come to a four way stop, turn left onto Midway Street. You will come to a "T" in the road, this is Saratoga Street, turn left, McCormick Lodge will be on the right.

Airports

Oak Harbor has access to three airports: Kenmore Air in Oak Harbor; Bellingham International Airport in Bellingham, WA; and SeaTac Airport in Seattle, WA. It is strongly recommended that you arrive via the SeaTac Airport vice the Bellingham International Airport because there are no shuttle or air services available to complete your journey to Whidbey Island from Bellingham. Whidbey Island is 2-3 hours from the SeaTac Airport so you will need to arrange additional transportation to the island. Currently there are two options: shuttle bus or commuter plane.

Shuttle Bus Service Arrivals

Currently Whidbey SeaTac Shuttle is the only shuttle bus service available to the island, which takes the Clinton/Mukilteo Ferry route and drops you off at Building 973, McCormick Lodge. Pickup service is in the lower level of the airport, same level as baggage claim. Reservations are preferred but not required, to make reservations call 360-679-4003 or log onto their website.

Air Service Arrivals

Currently Kenmore Air is the only air service available to the island. You will need to make reservations to insure seat availability, 1-866-435-9524 or logging onto Kenmore Air's website. Kenmore Air will shuttle you from the SeaTac Airport to Boeing Field to take a Cessna Caravan to the island, which is a small 6-8 passenger commuter plane. The Kenmore Air airstrip is located on the south end of Oak Harbor. You will need to either arrange to have your sponsor pick you up or call Triangle Taxi, they are currently the only authorized taxi service allowed on the base, 360-675-8294.
