The M23 Mortar Ballistic Computer
(MBC) is obsolete and should be turned in for disposal.
It has been replaced by the M32 Lightweight Handheld Mortar Ballistic Computer (LHMBC).
Demilitarization
The M23 is a Category XII (Fire Control) under DoD 4160.21-M-1, Defense Demilitarization Manual, Appendix A, pgs A7-8. Ensure the demil code and category codes are listed when sending up for disposal operations.
The M23 MBC is considered de-milled and suitable for release to DRMO when the center circuit card assembly ("memory card/hard-drive"), NSN 5998-01-412-0156 (item 2 in the figure below) is removed from inside the MBC body and this card is then either smashed/broken/crushed rendering it unserviceable. The M23 MBC is considered de-milled with the destruction of this memory circuit card.
Software Disposal Plan
The software disposal plan shall include procedures for securing, reviewing, and demilitarizing classified/sensitive technology, information and materiel. All security classified items shall be assigned Demilitarization code ‘P’ in accordance with AR 700-144, Demilitarization and Trade Security Controls.

Security–Classified Item
Declassification and demilitarization and removal of any sensitive markings or information will be accomplished prior to accountability or physical transfer to a disposal activity or release from DOD control. This code will also be assigned to classified AEDA.
Declassification / Disposal
The sanitization, declassification, and release of Information System (IS) storage devices for disposal or recycling shall be in accordance with NSA/CSS Policy Statement 9-12 , “NSA/CSS Storage Device Declassification”.
