How is the ITS Applications Overview Organized?
The ITS Applications Overview divides the range of ITS technologies into 16 broad categories, which are listed in Table 1.

The ITS Applications Overview integrates a number of information resources, providing access
to a broad selection of information tied to a particular application area. For every application
area selected, the website returns a questions page. This questions page provides a definition
of the application area and then lists the following questions, clicking on any of which leads
the user to information from different resources tied to the particular application area:
What are the benefits? The answer to this question is a
list of benefits related to the application area, with links to the reports from which they were
drawn, from the ITS Benefits Database..
What are the costs? The answer to this question is a list
of cost information about the application area from the
ITS Costs Database
presented in both summary and detailed views.
- How much is out there? The answer to this question is a
table of deployment information for the application area provided in both summary and detailed
views from the ITS Deployment Statistics Database.
What are the lessons learned? The answer to this question
is a list of lessons learned gathered from other ITS projects related to the application area
from the the ITS Lessons Learned Knowledge Resource..
What evaluation documents are available about this? Clicking
on this question shows the user a list of evaluation-related documents from the ITS Joint
Program Office's Electronic Document Library (EDL) website related to the ITS technology in
question. The master database with all evaluation-related documents has about 600 entries.
Most of these documents are reports that document the findings of evaluations sponsored by the
ITS Joint Program Office. However, other useful documents are included as well, including
results from state- and locally-funded evaluations. Many of these documents are also sources
for entries in the
ITS Benefits Database,
ITS Costs Database and/or
ITS Lessons Learned Knowledge Resource.
The purpose of making these data available is to provide the user with
a comprehensive literature review about the ITS technology being examined.
What are the related initiatives or other program activities?
The answer to this question is a list of major ITS initiatives currently being undertaken by the
ITS Joint Program Offices, as well as other U.S. DOT programs such as "rural ITS" or "transit".
These lists are reviewed periodically to make sure that they are still current.
What resources are available? Clicking on this question
taps in to the
ITS/Operations Resource Guide,
a comprehensive list of over 400 documents, videos,
websites, training courses, software tools, and points-of-contact related to ITS and other
innovative transportation operations strategies. The purpose of making these data available is
to provide the user with the full array of resources related to the ITS technology in question:
not just written documents, but also videos, websites, training courses and software tools.
- Who at the U.S. DOT can I contact? Based on the
points-of-contacts identified in the ITS/Operations Resource Guide, the ITS Applications
Overview provides a list of key U.S. DOT contacts related to the application area in question.
This list is shorter than the points-of-contact shown in the ITS/Operations Resource Guide,
is more closely focused on the ITS technology is question, and is updated more frequently.

enables the user to offer comments and suggestions on the ITS Applications Overview, as

Training sessions on how to use the ITS Applications Overview and other ITS Joint
Program Office-supported Knowledge Resources are presented at various venues and formats
