Station Open Houses and classroom visits are great ways for fire departments to promote fire safety to children. There are also opportunities to promote fire safety and prevention with senior groups, business and civic organizations, neighborhood associations, etc.

We have resources available to help you do the best job possible to keep citizens safe and to educate them about fire safety. Check out the list of resources below and complete the form in the left column of this page if you see any resources you're interested in obtaining from our office.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is providing no-match grants to volunteer/part-time Fire Departments across the state for personal protection equipment (PPE). This would include bunker gear, fire helmets, fire boots, and self-contained breathing apparatus units for new department members. Additionally grants would be available for physicals not covered by the individuals insurance or reimbursed by their department.

	Smoke Alarm Installation Program In September 2014, the Office of the State Fire Marshal implemented a statewide residential smoke alarm installation program as a fire prevention effort. “Saving the Lives of Kansans - One Home at a Time” allows trained volunteers to install smoke alarms in owner-occupied homes free of charge. Smoke alarms are available to fire departments at no charge - we just ask that you make personnel available to personally install them. More information
	Educational Prevention Supplies Hosting an open house or setting up an information booth at a community event? We can provide you with educational materials and promotional items such as coloring books, plastic firefighter helmets, erasers, etc. to distribute. 	"Blaze" the Fire Dog Mascot Blaze, the fire dog mascot for the Office of the State Fire Marshal, has much to howl about when it comes to fire safety – especially for kids. Blaze is also available to attend events around the state to promote a fire-proof Kansas and encourage kids to know how to quickly escape a building that is on fire. He will also promote the importance of never playing with fire, how to be safe with fireworks and campfires, and why kids should never cook without an adult present. 	Training Webinars for AHJ Inspectors Our office frequently offers free webinars to help inspectors be better prepared when they are conducting inspections of local businesses, schools, daycare centers, nursing homes, etc. Our aim is to provide the knowledge that will help make facilities throughout the state safer from fire hazards. Check our calendar for upcoming webinars, plus other training opportunities.
	Video Lending Library The OSFM maintains a DVD and video library covering subjects that have an educational value in the field of fire prevention and fire protection. The materials are available to individuals and agencies at no cost except for the postage to return the videos back to the OFSM. 	"Can we find your house in an emergency?" cards A home that can be quickly identified with a street address easily seen from the street can save valuable time as first responders arrive on the scene after an emergency call. These cards can be distributed at community events or in partnership with your local utility companies as bill-stuffers.
	"Toys or Lighters?" Display Case Many novelty/toy-like lighters look like animals, miniature cars, musical instruments, game pieces and other objects that attract children. Other lighters are look-alike miniatures of adult tools or instruments. For example: cell phones, hammers, paintbrushes, and felt-tip markers. These novelty lighters are dangerous in the hands of children unable to tell the difference between a toy and a lighter. Our display case of novelty lighters is available for           educational programs in Kansas.
