Generation
The Power Authority's generation mix ranges from two of the nation's largest hydropower producers to demonstration projects using clean renewable technologies such as fuel cells, solar photovoltaic systems and microturbines.
Our primary generating facilities consist of 16 power producers fueled by flowing water or natural gas and/or low-sulfur oil. Together, they provide up to one-quarter of New York's electricity.
Major ongoing investments to our large hydropower generators will ultimately top $1 billion. The goal: to improve operating efficiency and ensure reliability for decades to come.
- At the Niagara Power Project, all 13 turbine-generators and associated equipment have been replaced following a 15-year, $300 million upgrade completed in 2006.
- At the St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project, a $281 million multiyear life extension and modernization (LEM) program is scheduled for completion in 2013.
- The Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project recently concluded a $135 million LEM that replaced and modernized all four pump-turbines along with major equipment for the first time in 35 years. The enhanced efficiencies allow faster, more efficient pumping of water between two reservoirs, providing low-cost power during peak demand periods.
- A $460 million LEM began in 2012 at the Niagara project's Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant (LPGP), with overhaul work running to 2020. LPGP is valued for its quick response capability to unexpected demand changes.
The work being done at the three large hydroelectric projects is consistent with the Power Authority's role in being a good steward of these crucial state assets.
