NYPA News from Downstate New York
Highlights of our activities in the region:
Metro Area - The 31st Annual National Night Out, known as America’s Night Out Against Crime, took place on Tuesday, August 5, and NYPA was on hand to help educate and promote safer communities at Astoria Park in Queens, and Cow Meadow Park in Freeport, Long Island. America’s National Night Out is held each year in communities nationwide and is a unique crime and drug prevention event.
Each location offers a host of free activities for adults and children sponsored by local law enforcement, community groups and area businesses - aimed at forging a strong sense of community and establishing key partnerships in an effort to help combat violence.

Yonkers – Thank you to all who came out on Nov. 2 & 3, for the closing weekend of the popular Science Barge Art & Science Sundays series at the Science Barge, located at Yonkers Waterfront at 99 Dock Street.
Although now closed for the season, NYPA was on hand for the event and we will be posting some images of the weekend's activities and the Yonkers Green City Walking Tour soon, so check back for photos. Pictured at left is the 'Friction Bike' at work!

Long Island – Two regional firms have earned contracts to provide preventive maintenance for NYPA’s clean natural gas power plants in Queens and Long Island. Granted a $750,000 contract, Long Island City’s McQuay Factory Service will help ensure optimal operating efficiency and provide maintenance services for the Power Authority’s seven small clean power plants in the region.
A $2 million, five-year contract was awarded to Farmingdale-based Carrier Corporation. They will provide HVAC services for NYPA’s 500-megwatt natural gas-fueled plant in Queens, a similar facility in Holtsville, L.I., and small clean power plants in the city and in Brentwood, L.I. Details...
Washington, D.C - President Obama sat down with electric utility industry executives, including NYPA President and CEO Gil Quiniones on May 8, to discuss lessons learned during the response to Superstorm Sandy and ongoing preparations for the 2013 hurricane season.
Also at the meeting, held at the Department of Energy, were senior members of President Obama’s response team, representatives from industry trade organizations and officials from government agencies including the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security. More...
Manhattan - The Power Authority co-sponsored the 2013 Advanced Energy Conference (AEC) at the Jacob K. Javits Center on April 30 and May 1*. AEC has joined with energy conferences across the state to create the New York State Partnership of Energy Conferences, and features leading edge technology and research from a variety of global energy leaders. The annual event attracts energy professionals who work in the business, research and public policy sectors.
The high profile of the AEC makes it a key event for government officials, legislators and environmentalists, covering a wide range of topics, including: smart grid technology, solar energy, energy cyber security, onshore/offshore wind integration, and start-ups/innovative energy companies.
*The Advanced Energy Conference 2012 was scheduled for October 30 and 31. Due to the effects of Superstorm Sandy the event was postponed and rescheduled for April 30 and May 1, 2013.
Manhattan - NYPA and the City of New York have completed a $1.1 million energy efficiency upgrade at one of the most beloved and iconic cultural institutions in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Funding for the project was provided by the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) through Mayor Bloomberg’s sustainability initiative, “PlaNYC.”
Working in cooperation with the museum’s facilities management staff and DCAS’ energy management team, the Power Authority’s energy efficiency group spearheaded the improvements, which included upgrades to the lighting and steam heating systems. The improvements are projected to save the historic art institution $120,000 per year on electricity and steam costs.
Other cultural facilities - including the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo - have benefited from similar energy efficiency programs and are among thousands of tax-supported facilities in the city that benefit from lower-cost NYPA electricity. Manhattan - On Wednesday, October 24, 2013, New York Power Authority representatives joined executives from the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the U.S. Department of Energy and the New York State Public Service Commission to highlight the benefits of a $75 million statewide smart grid initiative.
Long Island - NYPA line crews from St. Lawrence-FDR, Blenheim-Gilboa and the Clark Energy Center helped to repair storm-damaged high-voltage lines in Long Island following Superstorm Sandy. They arrived with transmission line trucks and the necessary equipment to assist the Long Island Power Authority and National Grid in assessing the condition of their high-voltage transmission lines, and to provide support for the restoration to service of damaged lines across their service area.
In the photo on the right, crews are seen working under the lights in the Suffolk County community of Shoreham to replace insulators and reconnect conductors on a 69 kv power line.
NYPA personnel also provided assistance to NYSEG for power-disrupted areas of the Lower Mid-Hudson Valley.
