Fish Friends The eggs are coming!! Each year Green Lake National Fish Hatchery, with the Maine Council Atlantic Salmon Federation, provides Atlantic salmon eggs to local schools to raise in temperature-controlled classroom egg-incubators and fish tanks. Fish Friends (students) monitor growth and the egg-hatching process. In early May students release six-month old salmon (fry) into the river where the parent salmon hatched and returned to spawn. This program provides hands-on experience in natural resource stewardship to restore endangered populations of Atlantic salmon and prevent extinction. The program also provides outdoor experiences which parallel classroom learning about watershed dynamics and the impact human activity has upon the natural world.
