After the Storm - Hurricane Matthew and the Floods

Visit the South Atlantic WSC Hurricane Matthew PortalHurricane Matthew Information Portal
The USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center (SAWSC) is deploying most of the USGS Storm-Tide Network along the Atlantic coast to monitor the timing, extent, and magnitude of the storm tide during the passage of Hurricane Matthew. This data will be available from a web application portal.

SAWSC is also responding to the rains and flooding being forecast by ensuring that USGS real-time gages are operational and providing critical information on river stage and rainfall to the public, National Weather Service, and emergency management officials. In addition, USGS will deploy staff to make streamflow measurements at streamgages across the state to verify and update the relations river stage and streamflow. These relations are critical for determining the volume of water that passes a streamgaging station at any given river stage and are used in issuing flood warnings, mapping floodplains, monitoring water-quality and environmental conditions and managing water resources.

Preliminary Peak Stage and Streamflow Data for the South Carolina Flood of October 2015

Open-File Report 2015-1201
By: Toby D. Feaster, John M. Shelton, and Jeanne C. Robbins

This report provides preliminary information documenting the peak streamflows and stages for those rivers and streams in South Carolina that are part of the USGS real-time streamgaging network impacted by the historic rainfall that occurred October 1-5, 2015.

South Atlantic Water Science Center - South Carolina activities include:

  • Presentation of real-time streamflow, water-quality, groundwater levels data.
  • Operation and oversight of an extensive network of water-resource monitoring sites.
  • Archive of water-resource information collected for more than 100 years.
  • Data collection and investigative studies related to issues of concern to water-management entities and citizens.
  • Publishing data and topical reports.

S.C. Monitoring Networks

The USGS South Atlantic Water Science Center - South Carolina continuously monitors surface water, groundwater, and water quality parameters across the state. Monitoring sites are operated in cooperation with various local, State, or Federal agencies.

Find out about the S.C. surface-water monitoring network.

Surface Water

South Carolina provides real-time water-stage, streamflow and precipitation data at 152 sites across the state.

Groundwater

Over twenty groundwater wells are monitored by the USGS in South Carolina. These wells record data on hourly intervals.

Water Quality

Water-quality conditions are continuously monitored by the USGS at 42 sites across the state of South Carolina

View images from the webcamWe now have two webcam installations. The latest installation is near Wade Hampton, SC and is sponsered by the SC Department of Transportation

USGS WaterAlert: Instant Information about Current Water Conditions

Now you can receive instant, customized updates about water conditions by subscribing to WaterAlert, a new service from the U.S. Geological Survey. Whether you are watching for floods, interested in recreational activities or concerned about the quality of water in your well, WaterAlert allows you to receive daily or hourly updates about current conditions in rivers, lakes and groundwater when they match conditions of concern to you. Alerts are provided via text message or email for any station you select.

National Water Information System: Mapper

The new NWIS Mapper provides an interactive map interface to all USGS water data (historical and current). (Note: To access data, zoom in on the map to level 11 or greater to make the individual sites clickable.)

Google maps deliver current streamflow conditions

We recently added a Google-map based Web page to deliver map-based current surface-water resources conditions in South Carolina.

Historical instantaneous unit values

Historical streamflow unit values are now available through the USGS Instantaneous Data Archive (IDA)

Current streamflow rating tables

Shift-adjusted ratings are now available to you on line; they are updated daily and can change frequently.

Highlighted Publications
