How do I use ExPORTER?
ExPORTER contains data on research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), their abstracts, publications, patents and clinical studies citing support from these projects. The data are separated into five major categories of files: Projects, Project Abstracts, Publications, Patents, and Clinical Studies. Project files are organized by fiscal year of funding and publication files are organized by year of publication (all patent and clinical studies related information is in a single file). The files are provided in two formats: XML (Extensible Markup Language) and CSV (Comma-Separated Values). Records in the publication, patent, and clinical studies files can be joined to the project with which they are associated using the Link Tables and unique project identifiers provided.
What if I am having difficulty downloading a dataset from the catalog?
Some web browser configurations, particularly those that are designed for high security computing environments, can interfere with access to certain datasets from the catalog. This is most commonly related to government websites that use security certificates, and end-user browsers that are not configured to recognize those certificates as being authoritative. If you are having difficulty downloading one or more datasets from the ExPORTER catalog, please contact your local IT support staff to determine whether browser configuration issues can be addressed for your workstation.
How often are the ExPORTER files updated?
- Project files generated weekly for current fiscal year and for the past 3 fiscal years updated at the end of a fiscal year. Older project files are not updated.
- Publication file for previous calendar years are refreshed yearly.
- The Patent file is updated weekly.
- The Clinical Studies file is updated weekly.
- All Link files are updated yearly.
