NOTICE TO KBI FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORY CUSTOMERS

ASCLD/LAB International accreditation requirements states that the laboratory must notify customers (law enforcement, attorneys, court personnel, etc.) of procedures in certain circumstances. This notice will serve as a general notification to customers for these areas. By submitting evidence to the KBI Forensic Science Laboratory the customer accepts these terms. LABORATORY VIDEOS

BIOLOGY SECTION

Examines evidence for bodily fluids and performs comparisons through DNA analysis.

CHEMISTRY SECTION

Analyzes controlled substances and clandestine laboratories.

DIGITAL EVIDENCE SECTION

Collects, examines, and analyzes digital information stored or transmitted in binary form on a wide variety of electronic devices, including, but not limited to, computer systems, mobile devices, and removable media.

DNA DATABANK

Collects, maintains, and analyzes offender DNA samples pursuant to Kansas law. Maintains the Combined DNA Index System to link forensic and offender profiles.

EVIDENCE CONTROL CENTER

The central repository of evidence received from law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Kansas. It maintains the chain-of-custody at the highest level of security for all types of items submitted.

EVIDENCE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

FIREARM AND TOOLMARK SECTION

Examines, compares, and identifies firearm and ammunition components to weapons. Examines evidence for tool marks, clothing, and other objects for muzzle distance, and restores obliterated serial numbers. Maintains the Integrated Ballistic Identification System to link firearms to shootings.

LATENT PRINT SECTION

Assists in most crime scene investigations by comparing and identifying latent prints, footwear, tire tracks, and impressions. View more on the Latent Print Section.

QUESTIONED DOCUMENT SECTION

Compares handwriting samples from suspects to a questioned document to determine the identity and signature authenticity. Examines documents for alterations and sequence, which may have been forged or altered.

TRACE EVIDENCE SECTION

Analyzes trace evidence such as arson, paint, fibers, and general chemical analysis.

TOXICOLOGY SECTION

Tests biological samples for the presence and levels of alcohol and/or drugs. Assists the medical examiner in death investigations by identifying drugs, alcohol, or poisons, such as carbon monoxide.


FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The KBI Forensic Science Laboratory Internship Program offers students the ability to apply classroom theory by working and learning alongside qualified scientists in various forensic disciplines. Not only will students gain practical forensic experience, but they will also increase their post-graduate marketability.
