Consumer Voice and the National Center on Elder Abuse Discuss Resident-to-Resident Mistreatment

February 03, 2015—The Consumer Voice, in collaboration with the National Center on Elder Abuse, discusses resident-to-resident mistreatment and how to prevent and respond to these incidents with findings from the first prevalence study (video and slides | brochure PDF). Dr. Karl Pillemer, Director, Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research, Hazel E. Reed Professor in the Department of Human Development, Professor of Gerontology in Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College, shared findings, recommendations, and best practices from his research regarding the prevalence of resident-to-resident elder mistreatment in nursing facilities. In addition to his findings, the staff at Consumer Voice shared information and resources to better help increase awareness of these incidents and demonstrate how individualized care is critical in preventing and responding to resident-to-resident mistreatment.

Consumer Voice and the National Center on Elder Abuse Put a STOP to Poor Care Webinar

November 18, 2015—The Consumer Voice, in collaboration with the National Center on Elder Abuse, hosted a Put a STOP to Poor Care webinar (video and presentation | transcript PDF) to help long-term care residents, their family members, and other advocates identify quality care and potential issues. Presenters in the webinar identify indicators of quality care and warning signs of poor care, provide communication tips, and share advocacy strategies to help consumers, family members, and others advocate for individualized care.

Tips and Tools for Preventing and Responding to Financial Exploitation in Long-Term Care Facilities

March 5, 2014—The Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care hosted this webinar (audio and materials), which included discussions of shared challenges and best practices related to responding to allegations of financial exploitation. Naomi Karp of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) discussed CFPB’s role in the financial protection and education of older adults and shared new resources to increase financial literacy and prevent exploitation. Ann-Maria Beard of the Social Security Administration discussed the Representative Payee Program, providing an overview of the responsibilities and oversight of representative payees and how to support the rights of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries and report suspicion of misuse of benefits by a representative payee. The Consumer Voice introduced new consumer fact sheets regarding the prevention, detection and reporting of financial exploitation in nursing home and assisted living facilities produced for the NCEA.

Elder Justice Act: What It Says, What It Means, and When Will It Be Implemented?

October 26, 2010—The Elder Justice Act (PDF, 117KB), the first comprehensive federal legislation to address elder abuse, was signed into law by President Obama in March, 2010 as part of the health care reform act. This webcast will covers a brief history of the development of the Elder Justice Act; a section-by-section walk through of Act; and an explanation of the implementation process of the Act, including the difference between authorizations and appropriations, a brief explanation of the anticipated timeframe for implementation, and a follow-up Q&A (PDF, 248KB). The webcast is presented by Bill Benson, the NAPSA National Policy Director and the Managing Principal in Health Benefits ABCs, an organization offering health and aging policy, educational, and strategic planning consulting services.

Webcast: The Brooke Astor Trial: A Case Study in Prosecution of Elder Financial Exploitation

June 17, 2010—In late December, 2009, Anthony Marshall, the only son of the late Brooke Russell Astor, and Francis X. Morrissey, an attorney, were both sentenced to a state prison term of one to three years for defrauding and stealing from the legendary philanthropist. Although the trial involved an extremely high profile victim and the loss of millions of dollars, the case exemplified many aspects typical of elder financial exploitation cases. Because of these similarities, the Astor trial provides a valuable case study for prosecutors and other legal practitioners, APS, and various professionals involved in criminal investigation and prosecution of elder abuse. The Brooke Astor Trial presentation features New York County Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Elizabeth Loewy who initiated the Astor investigation and served on the trial team.
