The goal of the On-Site Wastewater program is to reduce the potential for the spread of disease through improper treatment and disposal of human waste. Potential contamination of ground and surface waters is both an environmental and public health concern. Proper disposal of wastewater is critical as the population expands in rural areas of our state.

New Application Process and Call Center
Step 1: File a complete application. Our application forms for new onsite wastewater systems are now online. Apply online, or use our printable PDF application forms.
Step 2: Return documents to us by email or mail to our physical location (see contact information and map below).
If you're requesting a soil and site evaluation (filing a Notice of Intent) please be sure to include the following:
- A complete application
- Plot plan of the property
- Legal description of the property
Step 3: Pay fees. Once we receive a complete application, we will email you a link to an online payment system. Follow the link to pay your fee.
- No cash payments or checks will be received in the county offices for environmental fees.
- There is a small processing fee associated with this online payment system.
- You should receive a receipt for your payment via email.
Step 4: When your payment is successful, one of our inspectors will contact you to schedule a site visit if necessary. If you do not receive a call within 48 hours of your receipt, then please contact us.
Getting assistance
If you need assistance with completing an application, please contact us at the toll-free Wastewater Call Center at 1-855-220-0192. Call Center personnel will answer your questions, assist you with completion of forms, and assist you with our new on line payment system.
On-Site Wastewater Program Activities
Wastewater App
Certified installers, pumpers, and manufacturers; property and subdivision information, etc.
The On-site Wastewater program develops policy and regulations and provides technical assistance to regional environmentalists in designing and inspecting Individual On-site Wastewater Disposal Systems (IOWDS), recreational vehicle campgrounds/lodging parks, septage pumpers/haulers and individual water supplies.
Environmentalists offer Soil and Site Evaluations that provide property owners with a Permit/Recommendation (required to obtain a water meter) and suitable for installation. Also, collect water samples from private water wells and investigates environmental (wastewater) complaints.
Engineers and Program Specialists offer technical assistance and training. Staff engineers review and authorize Certified Professional Evaluator's designed On-site Wastewater Disposal Systems, Commercial Developments (Subdivisions, Manufactured, Multi-family, RV Campgrounds/Lodging Parks), Commercial Establishments (Restaurant, Child Care Facility/School. Church, Shopping Center, Office, etc.), review and approve manufactured designs of wastewater components, etc. Program specialists conduct certification courses for those interested in becoming a Certified Installer, Certified Pumper, or Certified Professional Evaluator, inspect manufacturer's products, certify Environmentalists, perform Quality Assurance, teach CEU courses and provide technical assistance.
Wastewater Law
The Wastewater Advisory Board was created under MS Code of 1972, Section 24, § 41-67-101 in April 2011, for the purpose of advising the Mississippi State Department of Health regarding Individual On-site Wastewater Disposal Systems. As of July 1, 2013, this board will be referenced as the Wastewater Advisory Council under § 41-67-41.
