Foley elected ASM International Fellow

The Society recognized Foley “For significant contributions to the research and development in the field of nonferrous materials, including: beryllium alloys, uranium alloys, amorphous alloys and lead-free solders.”

ASM International named James Foley of the Lab's Metallurgy group to the 2014 class of Fellows. Recipients of one of the highest honors in the field of materials, ASM Fellows are technical and professional leaders who have been recognized by their colleagues and serve as advisors to the society. Foley is the 10th ASM Fellow from LANL. He will be honored at an October ASM International awards dinner in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Foley’s achievements

The Society recognized Foley “For significant contributions to the research and development in the field of nonferrous materials, including: beryllium alloys, uranium alloys, amorphous alloys and lead-free solders.”

Foley holds a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Wisconsin — Madison. He joined the Laboratory in 2003 after working at the DOE Ames Laboratory. Foley leads the MST-6 Characterization Team, which serves as the Los Alamos center of expertise for microstructural analysis of materials that do not contain plutonium. The team supports a range of programs, from fundamental science to weapons production. In addition to microscopy sample preparation, the team provides microstructure characterization using optical and electron microscopy.

Foley serves on the board of trustees for ASM International and the board of directors for The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).
