In January, 1999, House Speaker Dennis Hastert named Rep. Mica to lead the Government Reform Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources. As Chairman of that panel from 1999-2000, Mica was charged with the responsibility of helping to shape our national counter-narcotics strategy.
While Mica now serves as Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, he remains a member of the Drug Policy Subcommittee. He continues to work on legislative and policy initiatives to dramatically reduce the supply and trafficking of hard drugs into the United States. Also being developed are better approaches to drug education, more effective treatments and stronger enforcement of anti-drug laws.
