Members of the DES Speakers Bureau are knowledgeable about a range of topics. Below is a brief description of each subject area (Note: To request a topic outside the scope of this list, please indicate so in the request form)—

Data Loss – All organizations, large and small, should a have plan for protecting the data on their computer networks. By doing so, they can avoid the devastating effects that losing data, even for a short period of time, can cause. DES personnel can share best practices on data protection.

Internet Safety/Protecting Kids from On-line Predators – According to the “Highlights of the Youth Internet Safety Survey,” conducted by the Department of Justice, 1 in 5 children aged 10-17 receives unwanted sexual solicitations online. DES personnel will provide tips on how to keep your children safe.

Identity Theft – This is the #1 crime reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and has a negative impact on just about everyone: individuals pay an average of $1,400 in out-of-pocket expenses; businesses lose between $40,000-$92,000 per name on fraudulent charges; and the FBI spends an average of $20,000 per financial investigation according to a 2002 Government Accounting Office study. Learn how to protect yourself and your business from the crime that affects approximately 10 million people annually.

The Role of Digital Evidence in Criminal Investigations (for law enforcement agencies only) - In today’s world, nearly every criminal investigation involves digital evidence. During this discussion, law enforcement personnel will learn how to properly handle electronic devices during routine investigations including search and seizures, and will hear an overview about how digital evidence is managed and extracted in an FBI-sponsored laboratory or setting.
