RCFL Internship FAQs

The RCFL Program plans to start a third year of Honors Internships. College students who are interested in a career that combines the fields of digital forensics and law enforcement are encouraged to review the qualifications. The summer Honors Internship Program (HIP), provides outstanding undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to enter the RCFL Network as an intern. This unique opportunity to work in a cutting edge digital evidence laboratory supporting state, local, and federal investigations is a once in a lifetime event.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the RCFL internships—

How do I apply?

Interested students must apply through the FBI's Honors Internship Program. The application is on-line at www.fbijobs.gov/231.asp or click here to download the required documents.

Which RCFLs are offering internships?

There are currently 14 RCFLs located throughout the country and all are accepting applications. However, not all RCFLs may participate in the internship program. Specific considerations for an RCFL internship program will be determined once all FBI applications are received and funds allocated. Preference will be given to local students within commuting distance of the RCFL desired.

Are these paid internships?

Yes. Undergraduate honors interns are paid at the GS-6 grade level on the government pay scale. This equates to approximately $1,270 every two weeks on a pre-tax basis. Graduate honors students are paid at the GS-7 grade level – equating to approximately $1,410 per two weeks, before taxes.

When does the internship start?

The internship usually begins on the first Monday in June and ends on the second Friday in August.

Is a security clearance required to work in an RCFL?

Yes. The FBI commences the background investigation as soon as selected candidates complete all of the necessary paperwork. In addition, they are scheduled for a security interview, pre-employment polygraph examination, urinalysis testing, and fingerprinting. Although the process sounds daunting, most Honors interns receive their security clearances in time to begin work.

How long does it take to receive a clearance?

The length of a background investigation depends on a number of different variables, including how thorough and accurate the background documents are completed; the extent of the individual’s foreign travel or time living abroad; and the verification of any inconsistencies in the application and investigation processes.
