SEFSC Facilities and Laboratories
The National Marine Fisheries Service administers its research and management responsibilities through its headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, and five regional and science centers throughout the United States.

The Southeast Region covers the eight coastal states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, the inland states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, as well as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Southeast Regional Office (SERO) is located in St. Petersburg, Florida; the Southeast Fisheries Science Center is located in Miami, Florida, with laboratories located in Panama City, Florida; Galveston, Texas; Pascagoula and Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, and Beaufort, North Carolina.

Each laboratory is responsible for conducing research in specific subject areas, however, there is extensive cooperative research between SEFSC laboratories. Research activities conducted by the various laboratories are as follows:

  • Miami Laboratory: Stock assessments for species such as snapper-grouper, mackerels, highly migratory species (e.g., sharks, swordfish, tunas, and billfish), sea turtles, marine mammals, and other endangered or threatened species; research on coral reefs, MPAs, and the South Florida ecosystem restoration program.
  • Panama City Laboratory: Fishery biology and life history characteristics and essential fish habitat research.
  • Galveston Laboratory: Fishery biology and stock assessment of shrimp populations; gear and by catch evaluation studies; habitat research and restoration; and endangered species.
  • Mississippi Laboratory: Fishery-independent surveys; gear development (TEDs and BRDs); environmental remote sensing; by catch; and endangered species research.
  • Beaufort Laboratory: Fishery biology and stock assessment of shrimp populations; gear and by catch evaluation studies; habitat research and restoration; and endangered species.
