Earth Day Every Day

To emphasize Job Corps' nationwide efforts to raise environmental awareness and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Job Corps centers across the country participated in a special Earth Day Every Day (EDED) campaign beginning in the fall of 2010. During the campaign, students participated in several events centered on conservation and sustainability like cleaning up parks and conducting energy audits.

Earth Day Every Day Programming Booklet

The National Office of Job Corps created a programming booklet to guide the planning and execution of EDED activities.

Examples of activities that resulted from the Programming Booklet include:

  • Recycling Mania! - At the beginning of EDED Week, Job Corps centers across the country held recycling contests to raise awareness of reducing waste on campus. The Abraham Lincoln dormitory at the Atterbury Job Corps Center won the Recycling Mania! competition, collecting more than 24 pounds of recyclables.
  • Path to a Greener World - To remember their green efforts during EDED Week, students were encouraged to make personalized garden stones as symbols of their Path to a Greener World. The Delaware Valley Job Corps Center students painted stones that were then placed around the new tree they helped to plant on center.
  • Earth Hour - Jacksonville Job Corps Center held a "Lights Out" party to celebrate Earth Hour and raise awareness about environmental issues, specifically the importance of conserving energy. Students attended a centerwide cookout, played table games, and studied while using flashlights.

Earth Day Every Day Posters

To teach students and staff members about environmental stewardship habits, six different posters from a series titled "Make It a Habit - Celebrate Earth Day Every Day" were distributed to all Job Corps centers to display around campus. The posters communicated important messages and reminders about ways to save energy and reduce excess waste and water consumption.

Job Corps centers across the country sent in pictures of their Earth Day Every Day posters showcased in different locations on center to remind students and staff members about energy-saving practices such as turning off lights when leaving a room and unplugging appliances not in use.
