Care Guides/Guidelines
DISCLAIMER REGARDING CARE GUIDES
PURPOSE OF THESE CARE GUIDES
These care guides have been prepared by the California Correctional Health Care Services division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation using evidence-based guideline support documentation from many sources. These care guides are not fixed protocols that must be followed, but are intended for consideration of health care professionals and providers. While they identify and describe generally recommended courses of intervention, they are not presented as a substitute for the advice of a physician or other knowledgeable health care professional or provider. Individual patients may require different treatments from those specified in a given care guide. Care guides are not entirely inclusive or exclusive of all methods of reasonable care that can obtain/produce the same results. While care guides can be written that take into account variations in clinical settings, resources, or common patient characteristics, they cannot address the unique needs of each patient nor the combination of resources available to a particular community or health care professional or provider. Deviations from clinical practice guidelines may be justified by individual circumstances. Thus, guidelines for care must be applied based on individual patient needs using professional judgment. These care guides alone may not always suggest the most suitable or medically appropriate care - that decision will be made by a qualified health care provider. These care guides do not establish either a standard of care, or the minimally adequate care which meets constitutional standards.
WHO SHOULD USE THESE GUIDELINES

OTHER AUDIENCES INCLUDING PATIENTS
If you are a patient and are accessing these care guides, you should understand that the information presented is intended and designed for the use of the expert audiences previously identified. You should seek assistance from a health care professional in interpreting these materials and applying them in individual cases. You should not try to engage in self diagnosis using these care guides. The failure of your provider to follow the recommendations of a particular care guide, standing alone, will not support a Healthcare 602 appeal absent other care concerns.
