ITAM Community of Interest

August 31, 2009

In January 2009, the DoD ITAM Community of Interest (COI) was launched with a governance structure at the Senior Executive Service (SES) level with representation from the DoD Military Departments and Defense Agencies. The ITAM COI is establishing common standards and best practices across DoD, with the primary objective of making IT asset data visible, accessible, understandable, trusted, interoperable, and responsive.

The COI identified its initial target—collecting and sharing selected asset data about Microsoft Operating Systems and Office Suites, Oracle Database Management Systems, and Symantec and McAfee Anti-Virus products through a pilot enterprise ITAM process framework and pilot DoD ITAM reporting pilot. The DoD ITAM reporting application is envisioned to be a Net-Centric solution that makes authoritative IT asset data from Component ITAM systems readily available at the DoD level to support IT strategic planning and acquisitions. The graphic below illustrates the conceptual ITAM process for the pilot and end-state reporting system.
