Aerosol Mass Spectroscopy

The Aerosol Mass Spectrometer is used to study heterogeneous, atmospheric, and environmental chemistry of particulate matter. The machine incorporates an aerodynamic lens, which focuses aerosol particles into the interaction region while dispersing particles in the gas phase. In the interaction region, aerosol particles are ionized by tunable VUV synchrotron radiation and then extracted into an orthogonal acceleration time of flight mass spectrometer.

The machine may operate with solid or liquid submicron particles in a collimated beam. Sample chamber pressures typically operate at 10-6 Torr. Tunable VUV offers increased resolution over electron impact, and also retains the signature of the parent molecule. For more information, please contact Kevin Wilson.
