The Flame Machine

The Flame Machine is used for combustion studies of hydrocarbon- and nitrogen- containing flames. A low pressure laminar flow McKenna burner is coupled to a differentially pumped source and photoionization chamber. Detection is done with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

The machine handles gas or liquid fuels, which undergo a molecular beam expansion subsequent to burning in a low pressure flame (~10-4 Torr). For more information, please contact Nils Hansen of Sandia National Laboratory.
