Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
What is it?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus. There are more than 100 different types, and more than 30 of these are spread by genital contact.

What are the symptoms?

Most people who have a genital HPV infection don’t have symptoms, and often the virus simply goes away. But if symptoms do occur, they can include:
  • Genital warts
  • Changes to the cells of the cervix, vulva, anus, or penis
What are the effects?

An increased risk of cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis

Is there a cure?

No, but there is new a vaccine to prevent HPV. Call your health care provider today to see if you could benefit from the vaccine.

While there is no known cure for HPV, if you are a woman, the abnormal cells can be removed before they cause cancer. That’s why its so important to get regular pap smears.
