Fighting Position Excavator (FPE)

The FPE is one of several fighting position initiatives undertaken by the Soldier Enhancement Program. Its objective is to loosen the soil of a specific area on the battlefield, thus greatly reducing the physical effort and time it takes to create a two-man fighting position.

The official name of the FPE is the M300 Demolition Kit, Blasting, Fighting Position Excavator. It consists of an auger and two binary demolition charges that are inert until ready to deploy. The target area is prepared by using the auger to create two pilot holes about 42 inches apart and 42 inches deep. The two demolition charges are placed in the ground and detonated to loosen the soil.

The FPE is man-portable and the auger can be operated by hand. The binary explosive is inert until mixed so transport poses little danger. Ignition is non-electric using the Modernized Demolition Initiators (MDI).
