Recruiting Section Mission Statement

To recruit candidates who are ethically and morally upstanding and who are most highly qualified for the prospective position. The recruiting section completes screening at the New Mexico Correction Department Training Academy every Tuesday throughout the week in order to fulfill its mission. It recruits Correctional Officer candidates, as well as Probation and Parole Candidates.

  • Q: When are screening dates?
    A: : Every Tuesday and Wednesday (except holidays) at the Corrections Academy. You must be there for both days. (Screening may extend till Thursday, you will be notified on Tuesday.)
  • Q: What is involved?
    A: Fill out state job application
    Psychological tests and interview
    Physical agility test
    Polygraph exam
    Urinalysis and medical exam (2 weeks prior to start of class)
  • Q: What must I bring or wear?
    A: 1st Day - Documents Include: State birth certificate, driver's license, social security card, high school diploma or GED certificate and DD214 (Military Service Only). Appropriate Dress: Exercise clothes and shoes appropriate for physical agility testing (ONLY basketball style shorts, NO spandex, NO tank/spaghetti strap tops) (snacks and water for day 1 : There will be no lunch break)

  • Q: What are the minimum job requirements?
    A: At least 18 years old, high school graduate or GED, U.S. citizen, no felony convictions, and pass all phases of screening.
  • Q: What is the pay?
    A: Cadet = $12.35 per hour
    Correctional Officer = $13.65 per hour
    Shift differential = $.60 per hour
    PNM (Santa Fe only) = An additional TEMPORARY Recruitment Differential Pay
  • Q: Benefits?
    A: Annual leave, sick leave, holidays, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, and retirement.
  • Q: How long is the training?
    A: 8 weeks - food and lodging will be provided during weekdays. You must stay in Academy lodging during the work week. The workweek is Monday - Thursday 10 hour days.
  • Q: How long is the selection process?
    A: The selection process will take about three weeks from the initial screening date.
  • Q: How many trips will it take an out of state applicant to complete the screening process?
    A: The initial screening process is two consecutive days. The drug and medical screening VVill be scheduled prior to the start date of the academy
  • Q: Do I get paid while attending the academy
    A: Yes, you will receive pay. The benefits will be available after the second pay period.
  • Q: Why do most applicants get rejected?
    A: By being unable to achieve physical entry standards to omitting or falsifying on the application or polygraph
  • Q: What if I cannot bring all the required documents for the first screening day?
    A: Until all documents are received, your application will be incomplete and unable to process any further for review
  • Q: How can I submit an application?
    A: You will need to visit the New Mexico State Personnel Office website and apply on-line. Once we have received your application and you have met the initial requirements you will be contacted by a department staff member or you may attend screening which is held every Tuesday and Wednesday
    B: Probation and Parole applicants will be contacted once the department has received their application status to schedule a screening date. Applicants will be called according to location and job openings

Salary

Cadet = $13.73 per hour

Work Hours

Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to guard inmates in a penal or rehabilitative institution in accordance with established regulations and procedures. Cadets receive and complete training at a correctional academy for adult correctional institutions.

Experience

No experience is required for this position.

Employment\Educational

  • Pass Entry Screening Tests - Held every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. at the New Mexico Training Academy

Essential Dutie

  • Ability to be rotated to any post as part of normal post assignments and also to relieve other officers.
  • Physical ability to control inmates by force, when necessary, to defend oneself and other against physical attack by inmates.

  • Ability to provide security for inmates performing technical skills such as construction, maintenance, laundry, food service and in varied industrial and agricultural operations which involve climbing stairs and ladders; climbing around the inside or outside of buildings.
  • Ability to withstand long periods of all types of weather; working outdoors and indoors without air conditioning; and working around motorized or moving equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies; including climbing stairs and ladders while searching for escaped inmates; hearing calls for and/or calling for help; giving first aid at the emergency site; carrying an injured or unconscious person various distances to safety, up or down stairs and ladders; using force and/or deadly force, including the use of chemical agents and firearms, to control inmates.
  • Ability to read, review and properly apply information found in inmate record, which is related to the inmate's health and safety and to the security of the prison; provide appropriate information to other personnel.
  • Ability to comply with all policies, procedures, rules, regulations and post orders.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, forms and reports.
  • Ability to work under potentially dangerous circumstances in a correctional facility.

Probation and Parole Officers

Salary

Hourly: $17.60 - $23.64
Routinely hire above the minimum hourly rate - starting salary is based on experience.

Work Hours

8:00a am - 5:00 pm, or shift work 24- hour facility( Odd Hours , overtime and/or weekend work may be required.

Purpose of Position

Responsible for the planning and execution of treatment programs and supervision for clients on probation and parole. Case management is required.

Experience

No experience is required for this position.

Employment Requirements

Background check is required. Must be U.S. Citizen, reached the age of majority, and must not have been convicted of a felony. Must successfully complete defensive tactics, first aid and CPR courses. Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Must be willing to accept travel/geographic assignment changes. Must have phone. May be require to carry a firearm, work odd hours and visit offenders" home. Must complete 8 week NMCD Academy traning. Successful completion of the NM Corrections Department Basic Probation and Parole Officers Certification Training within twelve months of hire and annual re-certification. Maintenance of skills in self-defense, handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents and annual re-certification.

Educational requirements

An Associates degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by fifteen (15) semester hours in sociology, psychology, corrections, guidance and counseling, social work, police science, criminal justice, juvenile justice, education, and or public administration. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.

New Mexico Correction Department Disqualifier Protocol Policy - Must Read Completely

The following are basis for disqualification from further Pre-Screening for employment.

    • 1. NO FELONY CONVICTIONS. Criminal activity in which applicant has been convicted of, pled guilty to, or entered a plea of nolo contendre to any felony charge, been involved in any prosecution diversion program (PPP) as adjudicated for a felony crime committed will be permanently disqualified. Felony arrests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 2. Any misdemeanor arrests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 3. Any Domestic Violence Act conviction is automatic disqualification. Domestic Violence related arrests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 4. Any applicant who has been on supervised probation must have completed probation one (1) year from the date of initial application. However, any applicant who has been on supervised or unsupervised probation will be reviewed on a case by case basis based on the criminal act. .
    • 5. Any DWI/DUI convictions within the last three (3) years from the date of initial application, whether from an administrative sanction by the Motor Vehicle Department, criminal conviction, or military disciplinary action is disqualifying. More than two (2) DWI's/DUI's convictions in one's lifetime is disqualifying. DWI/DUI arrests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 6. Any convictions of Aggravated DWI must be older than three (3) years from date of initial application. Any Aggravated DWI will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 7. Applicant's tattoos will be reviewed by the Corrections Security Threat Unit to include those that are visible in uniform that exhibit nudity, are sexually explicit, display vulgar language, art work, phrases or language that depict discriminating beliefs or are a potential safety concern for the applicant will need to be removed or covered prior to being employed. Tattoos determined to be gang affiliated or give the perception of, and/or deemed a security threat will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 8. Any use of marijuana, hashish or synthetic cannabinoids within three (3) months of application is disqualifying.
    • 9. Any use of non-prescribed or illegal drugs to include, rave, designer or synthetic drugs, within two (2) years of application is disqualifying. Example includes drugs such as cocaine, mushrooms, LSD, etc.
    • 10. Any use of heroin, opiates, methamphetamine within three (3) years of application is disqualifying.
    • 11.Any use of non-prescription steroids within six (6) months of application is disqualifying.
    • 12.Any experimental use of any controlled substance, other than cannabis that exceeds five (5) times, over applicants lifetime, will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 13. Sale or distribution of any illegal substance for yourself or others is disqualifying, however this will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • 14. Any use of any illegal substance while employed as a law enforcement officer or correctional officer is disqualifying
    • 15. Any falsified or omitted information discovered during the screening process is disqualifying.
    • 16. Military Service – DD214 must show an "Honorable" or the term "honorable" in the Character of Service (Item #24) block. Final determination and exceptions will be made by the Director or their designee.
    • 17. Any illegal acts committed as a juvenile, to include sale, distribution of drugs and crimes shall be open for panel review..

300 meter run--71 seconds
Push Ups-- 16 minimun (1 minute time limit)
*Men - (16 minimum, but they should be told to do their maximum effort)
*Females - 1 minute (may switch to a "modified pushup"" after pushup #1,
which will be a full non-modified pushup)
Sit Up 18 minimun (1 minute time limit)
minimum, but they should be told to do their maximum effort) in 1 minute
