Scams
Beware of Immigration Fraud
The “Deferred Action” process is an opportunity for young people and an opportunity for our State and its economy. It should not be an opportunity for con artists.
The New York Department of State has received reports of scammers using this new opportunity to take advantage of these young people. Many times, these con artists charge a lot of money for services that are never provided. At times, victims are so damaged that they permanently lose out on important immigration opportunities. Therefore, it’s important that you and your family protect yourself.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) office has published a web site with helpful tips to avoid becoming the victim of a scam.
These tips include:
- The top things to know before and after filing an application or petition
- A list of common immigration services scams
- Advice on finding authorized legal help
- Educational tools to print and share
To file a complaint against an unauthorized practitioner of law, please visit the Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection or if you are in New York City call 311.
