Justice Jim Humes has been presiding justice of Division One of the First District Court of Appeal since his confirmation in July 2014. Prior to his confirmation, he was an associate justice in Division Four for a year and a half.

Before joining the Court of Appeal in December 2012, Justice Humes served in both the Governor’s and Attorney General’s office. He was Governor Jerry Brown's Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs, Administration, and Policy and earlier served as the Chief Deputy for then-Attorney General Brown. 

Justice Humes is currently a member of the Commission on the Future of California’s Court System Fiscal and Administrative Subcommittee, and has previously served on the Judicial Council Audit Work Group, and the 2014 Appellate Justices Institute Work Group.
