How to Participate ›› Field Reference Database ›› Collecting New Data

Collecting DataThe Student Conservation Association (SCA) has been contracted by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and LANDFIRE to help fill gaps in field data coverage. In 2004 and 2005, SCA interns collected data for LANDFIRE in rangelands of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming. In 2006, SCA interns will comprise a TNC Fire Management Traveling Team, with duties including collecting data for LANDFIRE in Florida, Michigan, and North Carolina.

The field protocols used by the SCA interns in western rangelands can be found in the LANDFIRE Handbook of Field Methods. If you intend to collect vegetation or fuel data from rangelands and would like your data to be useful to LANDFIRE, we encourage you to download a copy of the LANDFIRE Handbook of Field Methods and incorporate these protocols into your program. If you will be working in forests or a mix of forest and rangeland, please download a copy of the FIREMON tree data protocols along with the LANDFIRE Handbook of Field Methods. Together, these documents explain how to collect the full suite of data useful to LANDFIRE.

For more information, please contact the LANDFIRE helpdesk or Karen Short.
