How to Participate ›› Updating Products

Updated Products The Rapid Refresh was a "best effort" task to be completed in an expeditious fashion by June 2008. This brief timeline required limiting the scope of data updates to only those associated with wildland fire disturbances. The Rapid Refresh included a subject matter expert (SME) review that provided valuable information and also improved the Refresh update process. For more information on the SME review click here.

The core component of the initial phase of the LANDFIRE O&M strategy is the Refresh. The goal of Refresh is to update existing vegetation and wildland fuel layers to 1) reflect changes resulting from recent natural disturbances and management activities and 2) address discrepancies between the existing data and known field conditions. Refresh products will be incorporated into a new base map for the nation, which will be served on the National Map LANDFIRE in addition to the original layers.

LANDFIRE Refresh is now underway, and we are requesting your help. Refresh will rely heavily on land-management professionals in the field to supply the data needed to update LANDFIRE products. Data sought for Refresh include spatial polygon layers of recent wildland fires, insect and disease infestations, storm damage, and various land-management activities, plus any other natural-resource information that can be used to improve the existing maps of vegetation and fuel for the nation. The mapped attributes must be associated with spatial polygons (rather than points) accurately delineated on the landscape and must depict events or indicate conditions from 1999 or later. In addition to these spatial polygon layers, we seek any geo-referenced digital photos of vegetation or fuel conditions, vegetation or fuel plot data, and project descriptions or final reports available to support LANDFIRE Refresh.
