Success Stories
The following are only a few of the many success stories of Charleston Job Corps. These graduates' stories are proof that Job Corps can start you on the path to success.
Aaron Brown, 20 years old, arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on September 10, 2015 from the local area. He entered the carpentry trade under the direction of instructor, Tommy Fitzwater. Brown completed his trade, earned his high school diploma through the Penn Foster online program and received his driver’s license while enrolled here.
Brown has worked to accomplish his goals while attending Job Corps and it has paid off. He will be employed at Gestamp in South Charleston, WV as a Production Worker, starting at $12.00/hr. Gestamp is an international group dedicated to the design, development and manufacture of metal automotive components.
Job Corps students are taught to set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Brown has learned through achieving his academic and career technical training that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to do.
His future plans include enrolling in AmeriCorps to give back through community service. Brown would like to leave these words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students, “Stay focused, do what you have to do to succeed and don’t let anyone bring you down.” He appreciates all the hard work and efforts of the staff, especially his carpentry instructor, Tommy Fitzwater, training director, Sermario Wiggins, career services director, Andrew Walters, academic manager, Tanika Beverly and training secretary, Audrey Bailey.
Russell Rountree- 20 years old is from Washington DC. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on May 4, 2015 with his General Equivalency Diploma from Sasha Bruce Youth Build program. He enrolled in Network Cabling under the instruction of Adam Shortt. Rountree has worked diligently to accomplish his career technical training skills. It paid off! He received fiber optics, copper based systems, telecommunications, grounding and bonding and energy management certifications completing the trade February 2, 2016.
What’s next? Rountree has been accepted into the Transportation Communications Union (TCU), Job Corps’ Advanced Training Program at Excelsior Springs, MO to further his studies in the transportation industry. His goal is to become a freight rail conductor and travel.
Students at the Charleston Job Corps Center learn valuable leadership skills throughout their training. Rountree was a dorm leader on Truth dorm where he assisted staff with maintaining positive dorm culture and acclimating new students to a positive center environment. He was a member of the gold phase student incentive program for behavior, class attendance and community service.
Rountree is excited to complete the program and start the next chapter of his future. Job Corps students establish friendships along the way that encourage their success. Rountree is pleased his fellow classmate, Robert Thompson aka “day one” will complete and join him at TCU. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are, “It’s easy to do the bad thing, and hard to do the right thing sometimes, but it pays off in the end.”
Robert Thompson-20 years old is from Dover, DE. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on May 4, 2015 with his High School Diploma. He enrolled in Network Cabling under the instruction of Adam Shortt. Thompson is a hard worker and believes in doing his best at all times. Thompson completed the trade on January 29, 2016 with nationally recognized certifications in fiber optics, copper based systems, telecommunications, grounding and bonding, electrical service technician level 1 and energy management certifications.
CJCC encourages students to take more than one trade or enroll in the advanced training program to increase their skills and employment opportunities. Thompson agreed! He has been accepted into the Transportation Communications Union in Excelsior Springs, MO to further his studies in the transportation industry. His goal is to complete and obtain employment with Amtrak.
Thompson was a dorm leader in the male dorms on the Barak Obama floor. He assisted staff with maintaining a positive center culture and acclimating new students into residential living. Students are always encouraged to volunteer and participate in community service. Thompson participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Unity Breakfast sponsored by the DREAM chasers organization and the center's Youth-2-Youth campaign against violence, community walk.
The future looks very bright for this young man. Knowing his fellow classmate, Russell Rountree who enrolled with him will be attending TCU, makes it better. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is, "Come to Job Corps to fulfill your goals and leave the right way, as a graduate like me."

Dock New- 24 years old is from McDowell County, WV. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on July 6, 2015 with his High School Diploma from Iaeger High School, Iaeger WV. Before arriving at CJCC, New worked in the mining industry for six (6) years. Faced with layoffs and stagnant employment, he decided to further his opportunities through additional career technical training and enrolled in Job Corps.
New enrolled in the career technical trade of Facilities Maintenance under the leadership of Kris Woody and Doug Linger, Facilities Maintenance Instructors. He completed his certification in November 2015. Every student at CJCC is encouraged to get hands-on training through our work based learning program. Dock completed his Work Based Learning assignment at Southmoor Hills Apartments, South Charleston WV where he worked in landscaping and assisting in repairs with the maintenance staff.
Students at the Charleston Job Corps Center learn valuable leadership skills throughout their training. New’s employability and soft skills will continue to serve him in future endeavors.
The Charleston Job Corps Center encourages students to take more than one trade or enroll in advanced training to increase their employment goals. New has been accepted to the advanced training program for overhead line construction at the Gary Job Corps Center, San Marcos TX. He will leave the center on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are, "Stay focused, strive for better and keep your eyes on your goals."
Jakia Harvey - 25 years old is from Lynchburg VA. She arrived at Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on July 20, 2015 with her High School Diploma from E.C. Glass High School, Lynchburg VA. Harvey enrolled in the career technical trade of Pharmacy Technician under the leadership of Kathy Roach, Instructor.
Pharmacy Technician is a trade in high demand with competitive wages and benefits for skilled workers. Jakia passed the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE) on December 3, 2015. Her certification and credentials, along with a positive attitude and willingness to excel positioned her for an interview with Consumer Value Store, better known as CVS/Pharmacy. She got it!
CVS/Pharmacy is our newest Work Based Learning (WBL) Partner at CJCC. Duane Rohr, Manager Workforce Initiatives, CVS/Pharmacy made a presentation to students in the Pharmacy Technician trade on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015. Mr. Rohr is excited and looks forward to working with student in the Job Corps program. The new WBL site will enable students in the Pharmacy Technician trade a four (4) week externship in stores locally and across the nation. Jillian Valentine, WBL Coordinator has worked diligently to secure this opportunity for students and her efforts are greatly appreciated.
CJCC highly promotes student leadership and community involvement and Harvey meets the challenge. She serves as President of Ladies of Excellence, a female leadership club on the Charleston campus and Truth Dorm Leadership. Jakia completed community service at the local Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club working with children in the after-school program.
After completing her externship at CVS/Pharmacy, Harvey plans to complete a second trade in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) before enrolling in Advanced Training for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps Students is "Stay focused and remember what you came here for."
Samantha Bercik-26 years old is a native of Pittsburgh PA. She arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC)on May 27, 2014 with her High School Diploma from Belle Vernon High School, Belle Vernon PA. She completed the Pharmacy Technician and Dental Assistant trade receiving certifications in both. Bercik previously served as Vice-President of the Student Government Association. She is a member of the Ladies of Excellence club facilitated by Tia Welch, BCL and Dorm Leadership for Parks. Also, she is on Gold Phase, which is the highest phase for students on center. Her hard work and tenacity is evident by her accomplishments. Samantha is enrolled at BridgeValley Community & Technical College majoring in Pre-Nuclear Medicine. Her goals are to become a pharmacist and entrepreneur with her own discount pharmacy. "Samantha has overcome many challenges and her determination to succeed is evident through her tenacity and dedication" said Welch. Words of wisdom for current and future students is "No matter the obstacles, remember tomorrow is another day. Nothing is impossible".
Franklin Burdette-23 years old is a native of Greenbrier County, WV. He came to the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on February 9, 2015 with her High School Diploma from Maysville Community & Technical College. He completed the Office Administration trade in July 2015 under the direction of James Brown, Instructor.
Burdette completed his Work Based Learning (WBL) at Southmoor Hills Apartments, South Charleston WV. He was responsible for filing, answering telephones, work orders, shredding documents, using office equipment and demonstrating exceptional customer service to residents. Hard work and dedication is part of his character, as well as giving back through community service beautification projects.
We are pleased to announce Franklin Burdette has been accepted and will enroll in Glenville State College, Glenville WV on August 14, 2015. He plans to major in Business Administration. He will be the first in his family to attend college which makes it this an exceptional accomplishment. His future plans are to own his own business. He feel becoming an entrepreneur will give him a sense of pride and independence while helping others reach their dreams.
His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is "Have a sturdy mindset and don’t forget what you came to do. You can do it!"
Jeremy Hines-20 years old is a native of Charleston, WV. He attended Capital High and Nitro High School before enrolling at Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) as a non-resident on August 4, 2014 through Cornerstone Solutions, Inc. (WV Outreach & Admissions Contractor). He received his High School Diploma through Penn Foster and completed Office Administration in July 2015.
All students at CJCC participate in Work Based Learning (WBL) to utilize their career technical skills through hands on training. Hines completed his Work Based Learning (WBL) at the center’s switchboard in the administration department. He was responsible for answering telephones, directing calls and greeting guests.
CJCC students are encouraged to get involved while learning through community service, volunteering and center clubs, organizations and sports. Jeremy was a member of the football team in the position of wide receiver and line-backer. He says, "I enjoyed being a member of the football team, because we got a chance to travel to play against others teams."
We are pleased to announce Jeremy Hines has been accepted and will enroll in Glenville State College, Glenville WV on August 14, 2015. College was always a part of his plan, so taking the tour provided by James Brown, Instructor, solidified his decision to become a part of the "Glenville Pioneers."

Brandon Fluellen-24 years old from Philadelphia, PA came to the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on January 26, 2015 with his High School Diploma from Abraham Lincoln High School, Philadelphia PA. He completed the Office Administration trade on July 14, 2015 under the direction of James Brown, Instructor.
All students at CJCC participate in Work Based Learning (WBL) to utilize their career technical skills through hands on training. Fluellen completed WBL at the center’s switchboard (administration building) and Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority where he was responsible for answering telephones, submitting and closing work orders, filing and organizing tenant folders.
Fluellen served as a Recreation Aide for the Social Development Department where he assisted staff with maintaining equipment and activity rooms. He believes in giving back through community service and volunteered at Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club and Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary after school enrichment program while enrolled in the program.
We are pleased to announce Brandon Fluellen has been accepted and will enroll in Glenville State College, Glenville WV on August 14, 2015. The college tour provided by CJCC was a determining factor in his pursuit of higher education. He was well-pleased with the community and college’s ability to meet the needs of diverse students. He will major in Business Administration with a minor in Social Work and looks forward to becoming one of the "Glenville Pioneers."
His future plans are to become a CEO of a marketing firm. He wants to be the "go to guy" when companies need their products sold. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is "Stay afloat, you get what you put into it. I believe if I did it, you can do it too."
Danyelle Allen-21 years old is a native of Charleston WV. She came to the Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) on July 15, 2014 with her High School Diploma from Capital High School, Charleston WV. She completed Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) in January 2015. Currently, Danyelle is enrolled in the career technical trade of Carpentry under the tutelage of Tommy Fitzwater. Carpentry is a pre-apprenticeship program operated by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners at CJCC.
All students at the Charleston Job Corps Center participate in Work Based Learning (WBL) to demonstrate their career technical skills from the classroom in real life working environments. Allen completed her WBL at East End Family Resource Center on Charleston’s East End, where she built a bookcase to be used in the children’s library and a fence for the community garden.
CJCC highly promotes student leadership and community involvement and Danyelle has risen to the challenge. Allen serves on the Student Government Association (SGA) as Sergeant-at-Arms where she is responsible for keeping the meetings in order and on-task. She has participated at Camp Horizons for leadership students sponsored by Horizons Youth Services, operator of the Charleston Job Corps Center.
Danyelle plans to participate in the center’s advanced training program at TCU, graduate the program and work as an Air Traffic Controller. We are confident with her hard work, enthusiasm, and determination, she will reach her goals. Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, and never let them see you sweat."
Charles Ike-22 years old came to the Charleston Job Corps Center on March 4, 2014. He is a graduate from Duval High School, Lanham MD with his High School Diploma, June 2010. He attended Prince Georges Community College, Largo MD majoring in mathematics prior to enrolling in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Facilities Maintenance Trade.
Students at Charleston Job Corps receive hands-on training through Work Based Learning (WBL) to enhance career technical skills learned in the classroom. Ike completed WBL at Family Youth Development and Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston WV. He worked assisting the maintenance department utilizing his career technical training in keeping the facilities maintained for patients and staff.
Charles is very active on center and gives back through community service and volunteering. He is a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) and Public Relations officer. Ike is instrumental in providing ideas for positive center culture, events and activities for student leisure time enjoyment.
Job Corps Works! It is no surprise with Charles’ hard work, positive attitude and determination he is accepted into the advanced training program for weatherization at the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center. He has enjoyed his experience at CJCC. Charles provides inspiration and encouragement to his fellow peers. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students, "If you believe, you shall achieve and you will succeed."
Laurance Miller-Hicks-22 years old came to the Charleston Job Corps Center on July 13, 2014 with his GED from Career Starters in Baltimore, MD. He completed the Medical Office Support and Network Cabling trades. Laurance received several certifications including OSHA.
While enrolled in the program Laurance was a recreation leader, dorm leader and community volunteer. He participated at the YWCA Sojourner Women's & Family Shelter, Job Corps 50th Anniversary events, job shadowing, and worked with children at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School under the Community Family Development Corporation, directed by Ralph Miller. He believes in keeping physically fit and participated in the wellness departments, Biggest Loser competition and center hill run with Joshua Salinas, CTT Manager.
Miller-Hicks relocated to Charleston, WV and is employed with Areawide Protective. He is responsible for setting up safety zones and flagging traffic during highway construction areas. He is preparing for interviews in fiber optics, telecommunications and the network cabling industry. His short-term goal is to secure employment in telecommunications or information technology. His long-term goal is to further his education and obtain a degree as a computer engineer.
Words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is a network cabling phrase, "There are no brakes on the train" which means don't stop, keep going until you reach your goals. Congratulations to Laurance Miller-Hicks!
Jerri Rowe- 24 years old came to the Charleston Job Corps Center on January 19, 2015 from Bluefield WV with GED. Her career technical trade is Medical Office Support under the leadership of Jennifer Lester, Instructor. "She is a committed student with a bright future," said Lester. Jerri chose MOS because of her interest in the medical field and wants to work in the office setting in her hometown.
Rowe attended the National Job Corps Association, 50th Anniversary Celebration in Washington DC on April 20-23, 2015 along with staff representatives. The celebration included opportunities for Job Corps ambassadors to meet and discuss ideas, attend a formal gala, and leadership day for students with guest speakers. Also, Rowe was treated on a special trip to the Library of Congress by Erin Burns, Office of Senator Joe Manchin III.
"This was an experience of a lifetime," said Rowe who met with Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) on Capitol Hill and presented the CJCC building block of success. Rowe serves as secretary of the Student Government Association and Student Ambassador for incoming WV youth. "She is a driven advocate for the students," said Lisa Lewis, Student Personnel Officer.
Rowe is committed to success and encouraging fellow students to reach their goals. She is a good role model for students and invested in creating a positive center culture. Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is "take advantage of this opportunity, it could lead to a bright future if you apply yourself."
April is a graduate of the Charleston Job Corps Center and works in a job training match as a Dental Assistant in Baltimore MD. An active volunteer while attending the center she manages to continue giving back in her community. Her future plans include furthering her education by enrolling in college.
James is a graduate of the Certified Nursing Program at the Charleston Job Corps Center. He is employed in a job training match at Eastbrook Nursing Home and continuing his education at BridgeValley Community & Technical College majoring in Health and Exercise Science.
Mr. Jordan is a graduate of the Charleston Job Corps Center and resides in Charleston WV. He completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program and is employed with Eastbrook Nursing Home in Kanawha City.
Student Arlana Stephens is a graduate of the Charleston Job Corps Center and working in a job training match as a Dental Assistant at Gateway Dental. She enjoys her job and recently started a family. Keep up the good work!
Marycait Hoke- 24 years old came to the Charleston Job Corps Center on April 21, 2014. She is a graduate from Lincoln County High School, Hamlin WV with her High School Diploma, May 2009. She attended Marshall University and WV State University prior to enrolling in the Office Administration Trade.
Students at Charleston Job Corps receive hands-on training through Work Based Learning to enhance career technical skills learned in the classroom. Hoke completed Work Based Learning at Area Wide Protective, Dunbar WV and Lyne Ranson’s Law Office on Kanawha Boulevard. She was responsible for answering telephones, completing time schedules, organizing files, copying and additional office duties in her assignments.
Marycait worked on the student newspaper typing and editing articles in her trade. James Brown, Office Administration (OA) Instructor said, "Marycait was one of my best Office Administration students and understood the philosophy of Playing like a Champion Everyday, as well as striving for excellence. I know that Marycait will do great things because she is truly a success story."
Job Corps Works! It is no surprise Hoke received a job offer with WV Supreme Court of Appeals as a Data Quality Specialist at the Kanawha City location. Marycait would like to thank James Brown, Instructor and Steven Canterbury, Administrative Director, WV Judiciary who helped with job placement. Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are "things may get hard, but if you can make it through, you will have a great reward".
Azel Walls is 22 years old from Charleston, WV. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on November 11, 2013. Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) is operated by Horizons Youth Services for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Azel was a graduate of Mountaineer Challenge Academy before entering the program with his GED. He completed the carpentry trade under the leadership of Tommy Fitzwater, Carpentry Instructor. He has received Green Awareness, OSHA, and Scaffolding certification which increases his employment opportunities.
Work Based Learning is a fundamental component to student success at the Charleston Job Corps Center. Students receive hands on training in their industry environment with our various partners and organizations. Azel completed work based learning at Southmoor Hills Apts., South Charleston, WV where he worked four weeks in general carpentry and a variety of construction duties.
Azel has been accepted to WV State University and will begin January 2015 majoring in engineering. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students "focus on your education and never give up."
Sharis Purnell is 24 years old from Wilmington, DE. She arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on September 19, 2013. Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) is operated by Horizons Youth Services for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Sharis graduated from Christiana High School, Newark DE on June 2009 with a High School Diploma. She completed Office Administration (OA) under the leadership of James Brown, OA Instructor.
Many students participate in clubs and organizations while attending the center and Sharis is one of those students. She is a regular volunteer at after school programs and community service projects. Purnell is a recreation leader and assistant to numerous staff on center wide projects. She is often seen in the administration building doing the safety and administration bulletin boards.
Sharis completed Work Based Learning at the American Red Cross-WV Region, Cross Lanes WV where she utilized her trade skills. Her tasks included filing, answering telephones, data entry, and operating office equipment. Sharis will leave the center to enter advanced training on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 at Gadsden Alabama Job Corps Center, Gadsden AL. She will further her studies in Human Services.
Her future plans are to complete advanced training and go to college for business administration. Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students "remember why you are here and have no regrets."
Selena Small is 21 years old from Manning, SC. She arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on January 28, 2014. Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) is operated by Horizons Youth Services for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Small graduated from Manning High School, Manning SC on June 2012 with a High School Diploma. She completed Office Administration (OA) under the leadership of James Brown, OA Instructor.
Selena is very active on center and believes in contributing to her fellow students and staff. She is a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) and serves as the SGA Vice President and Recreation Leader in the recreation department. Her participation on the volleyball, softball, and cheerleading squad is an asset to her fellow teammates. Also, she sings with the CJCC Choir and serves on the Multicultural committee.
Selena completed Work Based Learning at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Charleston WV where she utilized her trade skills. Her tasks included filing, answering telephones, data entry, and operating office equipment. Selena will leave the center to enter advanced training on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 at Gadsden Alabama Job Corps Center, Gadsden AL. She will further her studies in Human Services.
Her future plans are to complete advanced training, got to college and obtain a PHD in Human Services. She wants to work with juveniles and seniors. Her words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students "its not where you come from, it’s where you’re going."
Jammal Diehl is 22 years old and a native of Philadelphia, PA. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on July 28, 2013. Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) is operated by Horizons Youth Services for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Jammal received his High School Diploma through the Penn Foster program and completed Medical Office Support (MOS) at the center.
Mr. Diehl believes in giving back to his community. He participated in class blood drives and the Susan G. Komen Walk for cancer during his time in the program. He acknowledges the efforts of all staff, especially Ms. Preiser, Residential Advisor, Ms. Hodge, Residential Advisor and Ms. Lester, MOS Instructor who refused to let him give up.
Jammal anticipates graduating in the National Job Corps Commencement, August 22, 2014. His future plans are to continue working at ResCare in Direct Care Support, Charleston WV and enroll in WV State University as a Communications Major with a minor in Business Administration. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students is, "the only thing that can stop you, is you. Keep going and never stop."
Corey Moles is 18 years old and a native of Ripley WV. He arrived at the Charleston Job Corps Center on March 17 2014. Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) is operated by Horizons Youth Services for the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Corey received a High School Diploma from Mountaineer Challenge Academy, Kingwood WV and learned life skills. He came to Charleston Job Corps Center to train as a Certified Nursing Assistant under the leadership of Ms. Pam Dawson. He holds the highest class average for the trade and completed Work Based Learning at Hospice Care, Charleston WV.
The students at CJCC are encouraged to be leaders and actively engaged during their stay and Corey fulfilled the call. He served as Committee Chairman for Student Government Association (SGA) where he was responsible for all committees, as well as Recreational Aide in the Social Development Department. Corey graduated Tuesday, July 29, 2014 and plans to attend Advanced Training at Cassadaga Job Corps Center, Cassadaga NY for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). His future plans are to become a LPN, return back to the area, and work for Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC), Charleston WV. Corey’s words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are "as long as you never give up, you will always succeed."
Twenty-five-year-old Daviya Doyle-Tull came to Charleston Job Corps Center in August 2013 with a need for academic and career technical training. She realized getting an education and skilled training was crucial for her future success.
At our center, Daviya received her high school equivalency certificate, completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, and completed work-based learning at Hubbard Hospice House. She was also a very active student, participating in dorm leadership for the Truth Dorm as well as the Safety Cadets, the Student Government Association (SGA), and our center's volleyball team.
Daviya's future plans include the Registered Nursing program at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) in Charleston, West Virginia. She hopes to become a registered nurse (RN) in the state of West Virginia.
Daviya would like to recognize all the staff for their support and motivation to succeed. Daviya's words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are: "Strive for success and never give up."

Twenty-year-old Samson Holloman came to Charleston Job Corps Center in June 2013. He arrived with a high school diploma from Delaware Valley Charter High School.
At our center, Samson completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program and completed work-based learning at Hubbard Hospice House. He also participated on our center's football team. In June 2014, Samson passed his CNA certification exam and returned home shortly after.
Samson's future plans include starting his career as a CNA in his home state and furthering his education at a local community college. He credits CNA Instructor Pamela Dawson for providing good trade knowledge and encouraging him to excel, as well as Career Counselor Dawnetta Courts for her timely advice and willingness to assist him with his career goals.
Samson's words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are: "Always strive for things that seem unreachable, because you really can achieve them."

Mercedes Dominique
Twenty-four-year-old Mercedes Dominique came to Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) in December 2014 from Landover, Maryland. Mercedes had previously earned her high school diploma from Fairmont Heights High School in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Mercedes completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) trade under the leadership of Instructor Sheila Farris. Mercedes also had the highest class average for that trade.
Mercedes was an active student during her time at our center. She was a member of Ladies with a Vision, a student female organization that promotes activities on center. She also served on Dorm Leadership for Parks Dorm. Mercedes will be going to TCU Advanced Training at Potomac Job Corps Center in Washington, DC.
After she completes advanced training, Mercedes plans to start a career as a train conductor in Washington, DC. She credits her counselor, Gerald Bush, for his continuous support and motivation to complete the program.
Mercedes is a very focused and mature young lady with a bright future ahead of her. Her words of wisdom for other students are: "Focus on the outcome of what your hard work will produce instead of the temporary obstacles you may face on the road to success."

Jose Cruz Garcia
Jose Cruz Garcia was 19 years old when he came to Charleston Job Corps Center in October 2013 from Greenville, South Carolina. Jose had previously earned his high school diploma from Berea High School in Greenville.
Jose was an active student during his time at our center. He completed the Office Administration trade under the leadership of Instructor James Brown. He was also a member of the CJCC soccer and football teams. He graduated from Charleston Job Corps in April 2014 and is now taking TCU Advanced Training at Atlanta Job Corps Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
After he completes advanced training, Jose wants to begin his career in the transportation industry working with the railroad system in Atlanta or wherever his career path will lead. He said, "My counselor, Ms. Green, really helped me a lot, and I want to thank her for all her support."
His words of wisdom for other students are: "Stay focused, work hard, and you will be successful."

Andre Hockaday
Twenty-three-year-old Andre Hockaday came to the Charleston Job Corps Center from Washington, DC. He arrived in August 2012 with a need for academic and career technical training. He was determined to succeed at all costs to make his future prospects better.
Andre took the GED exam several times but did not pass. Nevertheless, he refused to give up and passed the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam, formerly known as the GED exam, in March 2014. Training Director Tony Westbrook stated, "This young man is a success story. He stuck it out and was the first student to pass the new GED exam in 2014."
Andre completed the Carpentry trade under the direction of Instructor Tommy Fitzwater of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Andre also participated in Modern Man and served as a Recreation Aide in our center's Social Development Department.
Andre is now employed by Horizons Youth Services, and his current wage is $8.66 per hour. Human Resources Manger Teresa Miller stated, "Mr. Hockaday is model student and lives employability. He is a role model for our other students and has been an exemplary employee."
Andre graduated from Charleston Job Corps on March 28, 2014. His words of wisdom to other students attending or thinking about Job Corps are: "Stick it out no matter what your challenges may be."

Michael Coyle
Michael Coyle, age 24 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, arrived at Charleston Job Corps Center in May 2013 with his high school diploma. At our center, he completed the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) trade under the instruction of Mr. Martin Easly. Michael will attend the advanced training Pittsburgh Weatherization Program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After completing the advanced training, Michael plans to further his education in the field of law while working in his technical field of expertise.
Michael has been on "Gold Phase" which is a center-wide recognition for attendance and positive behavior on center. He has also participated in community service events such as the United Way Day of Caring 2014 and plans to continue to give back to his community in the future.
Michael's words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are: "Do what you have to do to be successful. I'm on the first step and don't plan on stopping."

James Ford
James Ford, age 19 from Baltimore, Maryland, arrived at Charleston Job Corps Center in June 2013 with his high school diploma. At our center, he completed the HVAC trade under the instruction of Mr. Martin Easly. James has been accepted to the advanced training Pittsburgh Weatherization Program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he plans to study and become an HVAC technician.
While attending CJCC, James has been active by playing on the basketball team and completing his work-based learning assignments by servicing packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) units. His hobbies include playing basketball, socializing with friends, and traveling. His words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are: "Finish the job."

Stephanie Rager
Stephanie Rager, age 19 from Levittown, Pennsylvania, came to Charleston Job Corps Center in August 2012 with her high school diploma. At our center, she completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Medical Office Support trades under the instruction of Ms. Pam Dawson and Ms. Jennifer Lester, respectively. She completed an extra level in MOS for Billing and Coding.
Stephanie was an active student while attending CJCC. She was the president of Ladies with a Vision, a student female organization that promotes activities on center under the direction of Ms. Katherine Bass. Also, she served on Dorm Leadership and participated in community service events such as the center-sponsored American Red Cross Blood Drive and the 2013 Thomas Memorial Hospital Family Wellness and Safety Day.
Stephanie's words of wisdom to current and future Job Corps students are: "Keep your head up. It may get worse, before it gets better, but you will get there."

Champagne Hill
Champagne Hill arrived at Charleston Job Corps Center in June 2011 with her high school diploma. At our center, she completed the Office Administration Trade. She then went to the TCU Program at Shriver Job Corps Center for advanced training in the Amtrak, Mass Transit, and Railroad Freight Clerk trades in April 2013.
Once she completed the advanced training program, Champagne gained employment in November 2013 with Amtrak in Queens, New York, as a coach cleaner earning $16.49 per hour. Her job duties include cleaning diner cars and making sure the train is presentable for customers. She now lives in the Bronx, New York, with her grandmother. She plans to advance in the company after her six-month trial period of attending to customers on the train.

Angelo Stringfellow
Angelo Stringfellow was 21 years old when he came to Charleston Job Corps Center in January 2013 from Baltimore, Maryland. He arrived with a high school diploma from Heritage High School in Baltimore. Recently, Angelo completed the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) training program on center.
Angelo has been accepted into the Advanced Weatherization Program at Pittsburgh Job Corps Center. It is a 16-week training program that prepares students to work in the construction of facilities that are energy efficient and align with the International Building Code. After completing the program, Angelo plans to go to college to further his education and become a mechanical engineer.
Special recognition goes to Angelo's HVAC Instructor, Martin Easly, for his teaching and motivation. Angelo stated, "He motivated me, and his expectations for me were high which made me want to achieve more."
Mr. Easly stated that one word came to mind in describing Angelo: "Exemplary." He went on to say, "Angelo started and finished strong in his trade program and is to be commended for his hard work and dedication."
Angelo's words of wisdom for fellow Job Corps students: "Don't get sidetracked and forget what you came here for."

Jerusalem Lulseged
Jerusalem Lulseged was 21 years old when she came to Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) from Washington D.C. in May 2011. She arrived with her high school diploma and completed the Medical Office Support trade at CJCC. She then worked part-time in the Charleston Town Center while furthering her studies.
Jerusalem was accepted into CJCC's Advanced Career Training/Off-Center Training (ACT/OCT) program and attended Garnet Career Center for training in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) and Phlebotomy. She graduated on July 18, 2013, with a diploma as a Licensed Practical Nurse. The Garnet staff were very pleased and impressed with her performance and work ethic and requested more students like her.
Jerusalem's future plans are to enroll in the Registered Nursing (RN) program at Bridge Valley Community & Technical College in Charleston, West Virginia.

Alemaychu G. Mengste
Charleston Job Corps Center salutes ACT/OCT student Alemayehu G. Mengste who recently graduated with the highest honor, summa cum laude. He completed the Facilities Maintenance trade and earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Computer Technology-Software Development.
Alemayehu is now enrolled in a collaborative program between Kanawha Valley Community & Technical College (KVCTS) and West Virginia State University (WVSU) that allows him to transfer all credits to the university's Bachelor of Science program. He will further his academic studies at WVSU with a major in Computer Science. Congratulations to Alemayehu!

Heather M. Dunihue
Charleston Job Corps Center salutes ACT/OCT graduate Heather M. Dunihue. She completed the Office Administration trade at CJCC and earned an AAS degree in Accounting. Caleb Hackett
Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) salutes Caleb Hackett on his acceptance to the UAW-LETC Advanced Automotive program at Clearfield Job Corps Center in Clearfield, Utah. He transferred in June 2013, and has had a long interest in the automotive industry. Caleb's trade at CJCC was Pharmacy Technician. The new curriculum he will study will be Medium/Heavy Duty Truck. Way to go, Caleb!

Dexter Jones
Dexter Jones, 24, of Richmond, Virginia, entered Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) in June 2006 and graduated in 2008. While at our center, he obtained his GED and earned a certificate of completion in Office Administration.
Dexter has worked in the hospitality industry since 2008. Currently, he is working as a front desk agent for Hilton Garden Inn and majoring in Hospitality Management at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia.
Reflecting on his choices, Dexter believes his life is good now because he saw something different; something better was out there for him than what he was doing before he came to Job Corps. He made a decision to take the necessary steps to change for success. Initially, he had difficulty understanding the care and concern of staff, but now understands the intrinsic value of helping others. Dexter realizes it all boils down to choices.
His words of wisdom to other students interested or attending Job Corps are: "Temptation will always be present in life. When you have hope and a lot of faith, you can see the right option. It's up to you if you want to take it or not."

Johnny Smith
Charleston Job Corps Center celebrates the employment of graduate Johnny Smith of Beckley, West Virginia. Johnny earned a trade certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant while employed at Pine Lodge Nursing Home in Beckley, West Virginia.
Johnny was a member of the CJCC Student Government Association and Dorm Leadership. He was also an intern for Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito's Charleston district office, a Job Shadow intern for Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, and a volunteer for several community service projects such as the Partnership of African-American Churches (PAAC) & AARP Health Fair, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and National Job Shadow Day.

Aisha Watte
Aisha Watte, a 22-year-old originally from Alexandria, Virginia, is a CJCC graduate. She arrived in January 2011 with her high school diploma and completed the Medical Office Support (MOS) Trade. In October 2012, Aisha was accepted to the Keystone Job Corps Center in Pennsylvania for advanced training in Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN). After completing advanced training, she plans to further her education and training by becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).
While at CJCC, Aisha was a dorm leader for Rosa Parks and participated in several community service projects and activities. When asked if there was someone or something that made a significant difference in her training at our center, Miss Watte mentioned Ms. Jennifer Lester, MOS Instructor "who has always been there to help when needed," Ms. Janet Jones, ACT/OCT Coordinator "who helped me get into advanced training" and Ms. Lisa Lewis, Records Clerk "who is always there to listen." Her words of wisdom to other students interested or attending Job Corps are "you have to want it for yourself" and "things don't come easy."

Marquis Wilson
Marquis Wilson, a 20-year-old from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a graduate of Charleston Job Corps Center. He arrived in July 2011 with a high school diploma and completed the Network Cabling trade. Marquis has been accepted into the Carman Machinist Program at Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas, for advanced training. After completing advanced training, he plans to work for CSX Railroad as a carman machinist.
Marquis was a member of Dorm Leadership and participated in the Recreation Department assisting for the arts show and theme parties. Marquis mentioned that his aunt who passed away was instrumental in his motivation to continue his trade. When asked if there was someone or something that made a significant difference in his training at CJCC, he replied that "the staff were pretty encouraging for me to stay." He also stated residential advisors Tonya Maxwell and Berrinice Smith were helpful and that "whenever I had a lot of family problems back home, they talked me through it and encouraged me to continue my stay."
Marquis did work-based learning at West Virginia State University under the Communications Department working with lighting and sound to further develop his ability and skills for success. His words of wisdom to other students attending Job Corps are: "Stay focused. Even though things may get hard here, look towards the future and you will succeed."
