CDR Damon Wenger

 

CDR Damon “D-man” Wenger was born in Akron Ohio and spent his more impressionable years in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He attended Purdue University from 1985-88, 1991, and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) where he was also in the NROTC, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and the 1986 Varsity Football Team. He completed Aviation Officer Candidate School in June of 1989 as a NAVCAD where he graduated with honors. CDR Wenger completed primary flight training with VT-2 at NAS Whiting Field, Florida in the fall of 1989 and reported to VT-19 at NAS Meridian, Mississippi for intermediate training in the T-2C Buckeye and advanced flight training with VT-7 in the TA-4 Skyhawk. He received his commission and wings in April 1991.

 

CDR Wenger reported to VF-101 at NAS Oceana, Virginia in January 1992 for training in the F-14 Tomcat with follow on orders to the Diamondbacks of VF-102 in March 1993. There, he deployed to the Med/IO in support of Operation Deny Fight, Restore Hope, Provide Promise, and was selected to attend Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) in August 1994. In January 1996, he reported to VFA-106 at NAS Cecil Field, Florida for training in the F/A-18 Hornet with follow on orders to VFA-82, where he made an Arabian Gulf deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch and the Navy’s first ever transatlantic detachment to Laage, Germany to train against the Mig-29 Fulcrum. In January 1999, he reported back to VFA-106 for duty as an F/A-18 instructor where he was a Strike Phase Stan instructor and an F/A-18 Demonstration Pilot. In August 2001, he reported to VFA-131 for his Department Head tour where he made two Arabian Gulf deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom and was an Air Wing Strike Lead and SFTI level 4 IP.

 

After his Department Head tour, CDR Wenger reported to United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) in April 2004 where he served as a planner in the J3 Force Rotation Cell and fulfilled all joint requirements to be a Joint Qualified Officer (JQO). From there he reported to Navy Recruiting District Portland in March 2007 where he served as the Executive and Commanding Officer. During his tour at NRD Portland, CDR Wenger completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Trident University and transformed his team into Navy Recruiting Command’s District of the Year for 2010.

 

After his Command tour, CDR Wenger reported to Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Eleven Staff in May 2010 as the Air Operations Officer attached to the USS NIMITZ at Naval Air Station North Island. While augmenting CSG-7 Staff in 2011 deployed on USS REAGAN, he earned his qualification as CSG Battle Watch Captain. After his CSG staff tour, CDR Wenger reported to Third Fleet Staff as the Fleet Air Training and JOPES/TPFDD Lead. While at C3F, he was the lead Air Planner for all major C3F exercises and integrated training, including RIMPAC and JTFX. Additionally, he was the overall C3F exercise lead for Terminal Fury and Northern Edge 2015. “D-man” has accumulated over 3200 flight hours, 70 combat missions, and 694 carrier arrested landings. CDR Wenger’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the (Strike Flight) Air Medal (3), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), the Navy Achievement Medal (3), and various unit and campaign awards.

 

CDR Wenger is married to the former Karen Muesing of Jacksonville, Florida. They have eleven year old twins; a son, Dylan, and a daughter, Chloe.
