New patient guide to Weed Army Community Hospital

Can I consult with someone before making an appointment?

Sometimes it’s hard to know when to seek medical help for urgent health problems. Having access to a trusted medical professional at a moment’s notice is invaluable. The TRICARE Nurse Advice Line (NAL) does just that. All Tricare beneficiaries can get health advice by calling the NAL, toll-free, 24/7 to speak with a real person by calling 1-800-TRICARE (874-2273) and selecting option 1

The NAL is a team of registered nurses who answer urgent healthcare questions. They give beneficiaries professional medical advice to help decide whether self-care is the best option, or they should see a healthcare provider. They will recommend if it’s ok to wait for care, or if beneficiaries should seek urgent or emergency care. There is always a live person on the line to answer health questions. The NAL has pediatric nurses to answer children’s health questions. If follow-up to the child’s care is needed or requested, the NAL will call back to check on them a few hours later. The NAL can also help beneficiaries find the closest medical care if they need it.

The NAL can also make appointments at military hospitals and clinics for Tricare Prime beneficiaries enrolled to those facilities.

What new patient forms do I need to fill out?
Under Construction.

What should I expect when I arrive, and what should I bring?

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time if you have yet to complete new patient form(s). You will be greeted by our receptionist as you “check-in” at the front desk. They will ask to see your military or dependent photo ID and confirm your appointment as scheduled. Shortly thereafter you will be called back to the exam room by a medical assistant, who will take your vitals and make sure you are ready for the doctor to see you.

You should bring your Tricare card and information folder, your military or dependent photo ID, a list of current medication you or your child is taking and a list of any questions or concerns you may have. There is ample parking around Weed Army Community Hospital facilities but finding them on Fort Irwin can sometimes prove tricky. See the Map provided in the Newcomers section if you have questions. It's recommended that you leave quarters early particularly the first time you a WACH facility.

What should I expect when my appointment is completed?

Our “check-out” receptionist will schedule any follow-up appointments as directed by your provider, and provide you with any prescriptions or referrals you may need. In the event you need prescriptions the WACH pharmacy is located in the lobby of the Dr. Mary E. Walker Center.

Appointment scheduling and cancellation considerations

Treating patients and eliminating unnecessary waiting times are our constant goals at WACH. We realize sometimes missing an appointment is unavoidable - but you can still help other patients by calling in as soon as possible. The sooner we have the information, the more likely another patient can be seen during that time. It's not only the neighborly thing to do - it's in your interest too! So don't be a No Show. Remember, "An Appointment missed by you is an Appointment missed by Two".

Improving your patient experience: JOES, ICE and the WACH customer survey card.
Suggestions or improvements on how we may better care for you and improve patient services are not only welcome, they are actively invited by the command and staff at the WACH.

Suggestions or improvements on how we may better care for you and improve patient services are welcomed by the command.

We invite you to fill out a WACH survey card, found throughout our facilities, after you use our services. The Interactive Customer Evaluation (ICE) is a web-based tool that collects feedback on services provided by various organizations throughout DoD, including WACH.

JOES, the Joint Outpatient Experience Survey, is a new DoD-wide survey used across all services to gather feedback on specific patient experiences during visits with their provider. When you receive a JOES, please fill it out within one month and give us your honest feedback.

Completing the survey gives you the opportunity to have your voice heard by WACH leadership. We use the survey results to identify areas for performance improvement. You can also formally recognize people or services that performed exceptionally. Additional funds for your hospital are also generated based on your responses and overall satisfaction ratings.

We take these surveys seriously and use your comments and suggestions in our effort to improve services, procedures and facilities to serve the community better.
