Fort Irwin / National Training Center Heat Stress Index (WGBT)
About the WBGT index:
WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, which takes into account: temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover (solar radiation). This differs from the heat index, which takes into consideration temperature and humidity and is calculated for shady areas. If you train, work or exercise in direct sunlight, this is the proper element to monitor.

Anticipate and be prepared
for summer in the Mojave:
Wear a hat and light weight, light fitting, light colored clothes. Plan to take frequent breaks in shady areas.
Safety - Take precautions
When the WBGT is high:
Take breaks in the shade. Strenuous outdoor activities should be reduced, especially in direct sunlight where there is little ventilation. Drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool.
Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Don’t get too much sun. Sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation that much more difficult

The Environmental Health Section (EHS) of Preventive Medicine will track the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index throughout the summer months beginning on 1 May up until and ending 31 October.

The heat category is determined using the temperature and humidity from this site is not indicative of the heat category throughout Fort Irwin. Rather, this heat category is a guide of the general heat condition present on post.

It is a UNIT RESPONSIBILITY to record the WBGT Index at your specific training site and implement control measures as necessary. For further information regarding hot/cold weather injury prevention contact the EHS at

We also post heat stress updates regularly during peak summer months, easily accessable by cell phone in the field on our Facebook site located here:
