The Nebraska Board uses the examinations developed and administered by the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG). The exams are offered twice a year in March and October.
A candidate for either the Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and/or Practice of Geology (PG) exams must be approved by the board prior to registering with ASBOG. A candidate may take both exams at the same time if the requirements for each exam have been met. Completed applications and all supporting documentation must be received by the “Application Deadline” listed above.
To qualify to take the FG exam an applicant must:

  • Have a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours of course work in geology including at least five of the following seven courses or their equivalents regardless of whether a degree as been earned:
  • Field Geology
  • Physical Geology
  • Mineralogy
  • Petrology/Petrography
  • Structural Geology
  • Stratigraphy/Sedimentology/Soils
  • Hydrogeology
  • Two character references - Each reference must complete and submit a Reference Form directly to the Board.

To qualify for the PG exam an applicant must:

  • Have a bachelor’s or advanced degree in geology or related geologic specialty with the above geology and course requirements
  • Passed the FG exam
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience following graduation from a qualifying degree
  • Two additional references from professional geologists - Each reference must complete and submit a Reference Form directly to the Board.

Upon approval from the Nebraska Board, candidates will be sent an ASBOG Candidate Request Form which must be completed and sent along with the registration fees to ASBOG prior to the “ASBOG Registration Deadline” listed above. An Exam Reservation Fee to the Nebraska Board is also required to be sent to the Nebraska Board by the “ASBOG Registration Deadline”. This reserves your seat at the exam and covers the costs related to the administration of the exam. Note: all fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
A candidate may request to have their exam proctored in another state as long as that state is an ASBOG state and agrees to the request. There may be an additional fee involved for this service. You will need to send a written request of such to the Nebraska Board once you have been approved and prior to the ASBOG exam registration date.

If you have been approved to take either one or both of the exams in Nebraska, but have not yet taken or passed the exams, and do not have an ASBOG Candidate Request Form for the current exam, you may contact the board office to obtain one when you ready to take the exam.

ASBOG publishes a Professional Geologists Candidate Handbook to assist you in studying for the exams. It is highly recommended that you download the handbook in order to become familiar with the type of questions on the exam and the rules for taking the exam. Note: There are NO preparatory courses, seminars, or reference materials sanctioned by ASBOG other than the ASBOG Candidate Handbook. The Handbook also lists what is and is not allowed in the exam room.

Reasonable accommodations will be provided to qualified candidates with disabilities. If you require special accommodations to take the examination/s, please contact the Board office at 402-471-8383 as soon as possible and inquire about the request process. Accommodations requests are required in advance, availability of accommodation on site cannot be guaranteed on the day of the exam. Any request for modification/s to the examinations/s must be submitted by the Board and received by ASBOG no later than ninety (90) calendar days prior to the scheduled examination.

Upon successfully passage of the FG in Nebraska, a candidate will be enrolled as a Geologist Intern. Upon passage of the PG in Nebraska and submission of the required licensing fee, a candidate will be licensed as a professional geologist in this state. The licensing fee must be received within six (6) months of passing the exam. After such date, the examinee will be required to submit a new licensure application and fee.

Exam Failures

After the third and each subsequent failure of either the FG or PG, the examinee will be required to successfully complete two of the seven core geology courses as listed in Title 171, NAC, Rules and Regulations, Chapter 3.4.8 and submit official proof of such for the Board for approval prior to being authorized to retake the exam. The Board recommends the courses be taken in the areas of exam deficiency. The first page of the application with the General Information and affidavit sections completed along with the current application fee and a request to retake the exam will be required.
