Radiological Emergency Preparedness

Alabama is home to two nuclear plant facilities: Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant located in Limestone County, and Farley Nuclear Power Plant located in Houston County. Both of these nuclear power plants use radiation to produce heat which is used to generate electricity. Even though the plants are located in Limestone & Houston County, Lawrence, Morgan, Lauderdale and Henry County are also involved in the plants emergency preparedness activities.

Both Browns Ferry and Farley Nuclear Power Plants have emergency sirens or tone alert radios used to inform the public about safety information. In the event that there is an emergency at a Nnuclear Ppower Pplant, emergency plans have been prepared by the utilities, the State of Alabama, and your local Emergency Management Agency to protect your health and safety. We want you and your family to be prepared. Remember to tune into your local radio stations and televisions for information and instructions from your local Emergency Management Agency on what to do.
