Tornadoes

Alabama has seen a significant amount of tornadoes in the past. A tornado is nature’s most violent storm which can be deadly and tear neighborhoods apart in seconds. Alabama experiences two distinct tornado seasons. The first season occur during the spring and summer months. The second occurs in November and December. From 2004 to 2008, Alabama averaged 57 tornadoes for those combined years. Tornadoes come from powerful thunderstorms that appear as aTornado rotating funnel cloud with winds that can reach up to 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long (NOAA).

Predicting a tornado can be limited at times. Most communities have warning sirens which give residents a few minutes advance warning, however it is important for each household to have a NOAA weather radio. You should also be aware of the different type of tornado related terms as follows:

Tornado Watch: Tornadoes are possible in your area. Stay tuned to your local radio or television for more information.

Tornado Warning: An actual tornado has been sighted in your area. Seek shelter immediately!

If a tornado is immediately threatening your area, you may even hear sirens. If you do, the most important thing is to TAKE SHELTER in a well- protected area that is low to the ground.
